Evanston is a town in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Laramie–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. Evanston is located on the Laramie River and its namesake street, Evanston Avenue, runs along its banks. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wyoming were fur traders in 1824-25. A post office was established at Evanston in 1829; it was discontinued in 1892. The town name comes from James Haskins Evans (1815-1877), an American lawyer who served as secretary of state under President Ulysses S. Grant and as chancellor of Yale University from 1865 to 1868. This boom led to increased development around the well site and made Evanston one of the most prosperous towns in America during that time However, World War I interrupted this period of success; many businesses closed or merged while people faced rationing and inflation at home After World War II brought prosperity again for Evanston thanks largely to mineral exploration across much of southern Wyoming through companies such as Anaconda Copper Company (founded 1902), Continental Oil Corporation (founded 1942), Raytheon Co., Incorporated (founded 1951), uranium trust Yankee Mine Corp.—and other large corporations—the community experienced declines during the 1970s because of factors including high unemployment rates among local miners following what proved to be an unsuccessful efforts by federal officials to reopen abandoned mines In recent decades there has been renewed interest in developing Evanston due both to its close proximity to major cities like Laramie and Grand Forks, North Dakota,[1][2][3][4][5][6][7] but also because it offers unique opportunities for outdoor recreation such as hunting deer over open country or fishing for salmon near downtown
