It is part of the Great Plains Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Evanston were surveyors working for fur companies in 1847–48. The town site was selected because of its location at the junction of trails that led east and west through present-day Laramie County. A post office was founded here on March 25, 1857, and by 1860 had a population of about 20 residents. The first store opened in 1865 and soon became one of the most important business districts in the county. In 1870–71, Evanston hosted an annual agricultural fair that attracted many people from around western Wyoming interested in buying goods from local farmers. By 1890–91, there were over 100 businesses operating in Evansville with a population estimated at 2,500 people. Although it began as a small town located near what is now Sheridan University District (extant since 1925), Evanston quickly grew into one of the largest cities within Laramie County and even beyond due to its innovative marketing techniques and tight integration with surrounding towns and villages: by 1903 it boasted six miles (10 km) of paved roads and 10 miles (16 km) of unpaved roads; 6 churches; 24 schools; 3 hospitals; 1 fire department; 3 printinghouses; 2 breweries; 1 ice cream parlor/chocolate shop; 2 movie theaters; 1 grocery store/convenience store; 4 service stations serving motorists traveling throughout Laramie County on two main routes—the “ Roadrunner” northbound to Cheyenne vice versa—and another route running parallel to Main Street leading south to Casper A public library was built adjacent to First Baptist Church in 1907 during Mayor John Denton's term as mayor pro tem.. Evanston was founded in 1868 by wagon drivers and their families who were expelled from Sweetwater County, Colorado. The first post office in Evanston was established in 1870. The name of the town comes from Illinois Democrat George H. Evans who donated land to the town for its establishment. Evanston is part of the Laramie–North Platte metropolitan area. The first pioneers to arrive in what is now Wyoming arrived during the 1850s when gold discoveries were occurring throughout this country. On July 3, 1858, twenty-six men and two boys set out from Fort Bridger on horseback to explore what would become Cheyenne County, Wyoming Territory. They named their new settlement “Evanston” after Illinois Congressman George H. Evans (1803-1868). When they reached the present day site of Evanston they discovered it had already been abandoned by previous settlers due to an Indian uprising that year against Spanish settlers nearby. In 1868 a group of ten men drove five miles westward from Green River Station to establish a trading post near where we now stand called Fort Bridger Trading Post No 1 on privately owned land known as Bridger Valley Ranch which stretched along both sides of Bridger Creek about three miles wide and one mile long (Laramie Co., Wyo., Land Book 1959 pgs 115-116). This trading post functioned as a point of connection with other Mormon settlements located between Fort Bridger and Council Bluffs, Iowa (Jensen 1945 pgs 50-51). In early 1869 an addition to this original trading post was built named Fort Bridger Trading Post #2 on private land also known as Throckmorton Valley Ranch extending along both sides of Throckmorton Creek about four miles wide and one mile long (Laramie Co., Wyo., Land Book 1959 pgs 116-117; Jensen 1945 pg 65; BLM doc E7013 09/14/97) which served as a staging area for travelers arriving overland through Walsh Pass across the Rocky Mountains into Nebraska before continuing southward into Utah Territory or eastward into California Territory before finally reaching Salt Lake City, Utah (Fowler 1946), making it one of only two U.S.-based posts outside Mexico City that traded goods with America during that time period (the other being San Francisco Bay Area trader Manuel Vallejo’s Mount Pleasant Mission Post northwest of San Francisco) . In 1870 Reverend Ezra Taft Benson purchased 2,000 acres southwest of present day Evanston from John Custer for $5 per acre less than necessary for him to build his envisioned home there so he could live closer to his church servicespotsters constituency back east in Springfield Township [Kramer 1886]. At some point around this time another outpost called North Platte operated outposts next door at South Dakota Springs scenic spot east side creek bed until it closed down due primarily to hostile Sioux Indians who frequently raided these sites while miners were working nearby including robbing stagecoaches traveling up our gulch during summer months [Phelps 1929]. In late 1870 Brigham Young surveyed and platted much of present day Laramie County within what are today Sheridan and Sweetwater Counties within current Laramie County boundaries – all without ever having set foot inside those counties – thus fulfilling President Young’s promise made just prior his martyrdom but also providing additional grazing opportunities for American livestock interests grazing adjacent ranchlands northeast corner Apache Junction then southeast corner Cedar Mesa [Goudreau 1932; Handbook Of Western History 1980] . It wasn't until 1903 when Brigham Young designated western Sheridan Township encompassing most or all modernSweetwater & Sheridan Counties within current Laramie County boundaries as "Evanston Township"utsuring future development there despite protestations by local ranchers seeking more eastern Hardin & Park Counties included therein instead [Draper 1923a].
