Cheyenne, Wyoming is a small town located in Fremont County, Wyoming. The population was 5,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Great Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first humans to live in what is now Cheyenne were Arapaho and Hidatsa people. The Arapaho had contact with Europeans through traders and missionaries during the 18th century. The first European to see Cheyenne was Pierre-Antoine de La Salle on July 24, 1769 when he stopped at what is now known as Waco Ferry Landing on the Missouri River. La Salle named the area for General Philip Sheridan's family home in England - "Cheyne" meaning 'place of pure water'. In 1868, Cheyenne's post office opened under the name of Janesville after Iowa City became an important city in the Nebraska Territory. In 1875, following approval from Congress, Wyoming Territorial Governor James Pillsbury designated Janesville as the seat of government for Cheyenne County which included present-day Fremont and Republican counties. In 1907, due to popular demand by citizens and officials alike, a new courthouse was built downtown that seats 150 people inside and 100 outside. The building still stands today and has been used as a library since 1981. On December 6, 1889, troops led by General George Armstrong Custer located Indian Reservation near present day Fort Laramie just east of town limits while searching for Sitting Bull Sioux Chief Crazy Horse who had refused to surrender his forces to Ulysses S Grant’s army ten days earlier at Rosebud Battlefield southwest of Cheyenne Junction (now north side of Capitol Hill Drive). After failing to find Crazy Horse or any other hostile Indians in this initial search party including several hundred cavalry troopers commanded by Colonel John Sturgis Sr., Custer ordered his remaining troops into battle against about 1,500 Native Americans consisting mostly adult men women and children numbering no more than fifty Effectively suicidal orders given clear instructions not to fire unless directly threatened by enemy warriors wielding bows and arrows instead they should withdraw if they encountered any real hostile resistance American losses were high with over 125 killed + 400 wounded taking place within minutes although most civilians managed eventually to flee before a stampede ensued leading some 4 miles northwestward until finally surrounded & annihilated at White Grass Hills near present day Fort Laramie National Monument less than one thousand meters distant; what followed has come be called ‘The Buffalo Hunt’ event resulting in significant loss off cultural heritage ranging from ancient artifacts such as pottery fragments dating back over 10 centuries up through Sioux Chief Crazy Horse's traditional hunting ground today barely remnant remnants according some historians leading many tribes across country resist relocation throughout early 20th century despite numerous offersresidential areas developed along busy interstate highways providing easy access both commercial & tourist destinations remain key attractions attracting millions each year generating tax revenues which support various social services enjoyed largely by residents & their families notwithstanding recent cost overruns resultant largely due to federally mandated environmental regulations associated with coal mining operations& energy production particularly affecting town limits)
