On November 7, 1908, this public transportation district became known as the Cheyenne Rapid Transit District (CRTD). The first electric streetcar service began operation on December 3rd, 1908. The CRTD served as an integral part of Wyoming's statewide electric light rail transit system until 1971 when it was merged into Amtrak's Denver-San Francisco Network

However,after 1945 Cheyenne experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community for larger cities such as Denver and Rapid City; however, recent years have seen a resurgence in downtown businesses and cultural events which have helped to revive downtown image and economy

The first white person to set foot on what is now Cheyenne's northeast side was Jean Baptiste Laclede, an American Fur trader, on July 10, 1827. Laclede and his party were travelling up the Arkansas River when they came across a band of Sioux Indians living near present day Gillette Lake. He traded some goods with them and then made his way back downriver to Fort Laramie under cover of darkness on July 12th. On July 15th, 1828 wagon train Colonel John Custer discovered gold nuggets at Wounded Knee Creek while traveling through South Dakota Territory on their way to Canyon City, Kansas Territory for marketting their product. On June 25th, 1876 MajorGeneral George Armstrong Custer led a contingent of 9 soldiers including four cannons and seventy horses overland from Fort Kearny east across Indian Territory into Nebraska Territory in search of Indian traders who had been caching supplies for winter at Hidatsa (present day Apache) Springs located about midway between Harper's Ferry and Omaha Junction on the Missouri River opposite Cheyenne Mountain resort area In 1865 there were ten campsites within one mile (1 km) of downtown Cheyenne helping supply miners during construction of $2 millionCache Cache Mining District coal mine opened December 1st 1863 by J P Morgan & associates: 4 miles NW corner Saline Street & Main Avenue] mined until 1880
