The first white men to set foot on what is now Cheyenne land were two brothers, George and David Wilcox, in 1868. They named their new spot "Wyo." In 1880, the area became part of the United States due to the Wounded Knee Massacre when U.S. Cavalry troops killed 21 Sioux warriors at Fort Bealton on December 15th, 1890. The town was founded as a small settlement around 1900 by ranchers looking for an agricultural center near Great Salt Lake City. A post office was established in 1903 and remained in operation until it closed in 1928. In 1916, livestock raisers James Fenton and Earnest Butler started homesteading east of town on what would become known as Butler Rancho de la Huerta; within five years they had developed over 1,000 acres (500 ha) of land hereabouts which has now been annexed by Cheyenne by deed (1927). However for all practical purposes Cheyenne began its life as a tiny community with just over 60 residents in 1907 when mail service from Great Salt Lake City arrived via wagon train running through Medicine Bow Pass loaded with goods headed for Laramie and other eastern settlements along the Missouri River Valley including Cheyenne itself! With only one store open at that time and three residences - two being log cabins - much shopping took place either among or adjacent to neighboring towns such as Butte (to the south), Intercourse (west),and Waco (northwest). As this remote outpost grew larger some residents started building homes on their holdings while others built outposts themselves using whatever materials could be found locally includingadobe lumber which still exists today accounting for most of current buildings construction although many newer structures have been erected since then utilizing more modern technologies like asphalt/concrete/metal roofs etcetera etcetera etcetera but despite these advances there are several original pioneer-era buildings still standing today including Horseshoe House dating back to 1907 which is currently used as offices by city government; Gorman's Store & Grill dating back to 1912 which served as a national bank branch before closing down circa 1990; First Methodist Church also dating back to 1912 originally serving primarily as a dress shop until it burned down circa 1960; and Last Supper Clubhouse built approximately 1935 consisting of ten log cabin style rooms each with associated bathroom facilities located atop a hill overlooking downtown where social events were held prior to dances at various hotels nearby such as The Palace Hotel where society ladies would enjoy eats after socializing outside during prohibition era! After World War II there was an increasing focus on commercial development with many businesses opening up including radio station WDIO broadcasting from upstairs inside Gorman's Store & Grill until 1957 when it moved out onto Main Street becoming home successively to Jiffy Lube Garage 1950-1964 then Safeway1971-1985 before finally closure in 2000 following suit of other local businesses vacated during that period such Asbestos Supply Co., Grandma's Bakery 1979-1980; Menard Tire & Rubber Co.; Waco Grain Elevator 1961-1972; Western Union Telegraph Company 1961-1970s; 1987 fire that destroyed much of downtown Wheeling West Virginia killing 5 people

The first people to live in what is now Cheyenne were the Arapaho and their allies who migrated from central Oklahoma around 1859. After years of trading with these groups and living near each other along the Little Missouri River, General John Custer and his unit of cavalry under General George Armstrong Custer landed on July 9th, 1876 at Fort Bridger and pushed out of Nebraska to reach what they thought was the Great Sioux Nation led by Chief Black Hills. They encountered only token resistance but found much more hostile Native Americans living east of present day Cheyenne in what would be called "The Great Powder River Massacre". Over 100 white men, women and children were killed including Custer himself as he tried to cross the river into Indian country undetected. Without warning or provocation those Indians opened fire on both columns as they crossed over into their land while supplies were being unloaded at the fort; one estimate puts the toll at 25-50 dead including Custer himself. This event has been called one of history's most dramatic turning points in American military history leading directly to World War I when US forces invaded Indian Country looking for Sitting Bull. The Battle of Rosebud which ended with Sitting Bull's surrender marked a watershed moment in American involvement in that conflict as well as symbolizing America's position as an empire builder abroad. For many years after that battle local historians have debated just how many people actually died during this massacre taking place less than two miles from where modern day Cheyenne stands
