Cheyenne, Wyoming is a small town located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population was 2,811 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sheridan County. The name "Cheyenne" originated from the Lakota word “aya” meaning "land that flows quickly." The first European to visit Cheyenne was John Custer during his 1876 campaign against Sitting Bull and company. He named the town for General George Armstrong Custer who had died in an engagement at Little Bighorn three years earlier. The post office at Cheyenne was established on October 25, 1881, by A.F. Stroud and Halsey Sperry. The first mail delivery occurred on November 5th, 1881. From 1902 to 1907, the Cheyenne & Laramie Railroad served as a vital link between Cheyenne and Laramie with trains stopping every 30 minutes or so throughout the day long! In 1906, a new water tower was built to replace an older one which had been destroyed by a flood two years prior! In 1925, there were only 2 businesses in Cheyenne when Spalding Motors opened their plant downtown! They produced buses and trucks for local service until 1958 when they closed down due to market saturation! However, their large collection of antique vehicles still survives today! In 1978-1979 a large renovation project took place inside of City Hall including new flooring and renovation of all public areas! This project included also installation of new plumbing and wiring as well as updated Electrical/Masonry systems! A beautiful carvingof buffalo head found at nearby Cache Valley National Monument was used in part of this project!!! Today there are several restaurants locating within walking distance of city limits serving up some delicious frontier cuisine!! On July 4th each year ( Independence Day), citizens parade through downtown wearing traditional Native American garb while enjoying refreshments from various businesses!!! Throughout its history various events have taken place that have shaped contemporary life in Cheytenne: these include but are not limited to: World War I; World War II; cattle drives; college football games; rodeos; Expo '68; Cowboys vs Redskins game (1969); Cowboy hat night; Christmas tree lighting ceremonies inside City Hall annually on December 12th.; New Year's Eve celebrations featuring live music outside City Hall
