On December 11, 1865, President Andrew Johnson issued Order No. 910 authorizing United States Army Engineers to dredge a channel across Snake River so that trains could travel between Denver and St Louis without having to wade through flooded rivers every time; this began construction on what would become US 6 east of town center and later US 6A west of town center; today these two roads are called "Pershing" Avenue northeast from downtown and "Johnson" Avenue southwest from downtown. Casper, Wyoming is a city in Sheridan County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Casper is the county seat of Sheridan County. It is part of the Great Western Plains region. The first European to visit Casper was Captain George Washington on his way to Cheyenne in 1792. He named it Eau Claire from a river near present-day Sioux City, Iowa. The first store in town was established by Pierre Jean Baptiste Chouteau around 1825 and prospered until 1853 when construction began on the Union Pacific Railroad. The town had a population of 1,500 in 1875 and 7,000 by 1900; however, during World War I the population decreased due to military operations nearby. In 1927 Casper became an incorporated city with a mayor and five council members elected at large rather than via wards like other cities in Sheridan County at that time. In 1950 Casper again became an unincorporated community when its incorporation was refused by the Sheridan County Board of Elections because it did not meet requirements for municipal status as set forth in state law at that time (the ordinance had been passed only two years earlier). From 1961-1985 Casper used its own ZIP code but then changed postal codes to 81601 after becoming part of the Fort Peck Area Postal District which included most of central and eastern Wyoming as well as parts of Nebraska and South Dakota
Casper, Wyoming was founded in 1868 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother Edwin G. Rockefeller as a mining town on the ranch of James F. Mason, located about 20 miles east of present-day Casper. The town quickly became a major center for the development of oil and gas production in the state, but it also developed into a popular tourist destination for visitors to see the Topeka Hills and other natural landmarks. In 1975, Casper was designated as the official capital of Wyoming by the state legislature; it remains an important city and cultural center in the state today.
