The first people to live in or around Casper were the Kiowa and Arapaho. The first post office was established in 1887 and was known as Fort Laramie. The name change came about because of an incident where a rancher named Laramie threw water on a cowboy who had been spurning his advances. In 1889, the territorial government moved northeast to what is now Sheridan County and changed its name to Casper due to its location near that new county line. In 1901, some settlers began moving into present-day Casper from Cache Valley and other areas in western Wyoming due to high gold prices for silver miners at that time. By 1907, there were over 100 residents living in Casper proper with most of them being men working for local businesses like mines and ranching operations. By 1912, however, all but two of the original residents had departed for other parts of the country due to high crime rates and lack of opportunities for advancement in the new territory. A variety of industries have thrived throughout Casper’s history including wagon transportation (mainly stagecoaches), banking (initial activity took place through Wells Fargo & Company), Manufacturing (made items such as saddles) until recently; agricultural production includes livestock raising and hay/grain storage; while downtown has experienced some recent development including a movie theater; it’s also home to many cultural events each year such as art exhibitions or rodeos which are often one major attraction locally during their respective weekends).
