Casper, Wyoming is a small town located in Sheridan County, Wyoming. The population of Casper was 753 at the 2000 census. It is the only municipality in Sheridan County. Casper is home to the Casper High School and the Casper Art Gallery. The first settler in what is now Casper was Levi Coffin on July 15, 1868. He built a cabin on a hill overlooking the Clear Fork of the White River. In 1870, John Hickey erected a adobe building on State Road 6 east of today's Main Street that served as courthouse until 1875 when it burned down. The first post office in what is now Casper was opened in 1871 by Jno Fenton with Wagon Wheel as the name. A store and hotel were also built before the permanent community developed around 1900-1901 when Jno Palfrey platted and named his own village after his son Jacob Pauley (1841-1910). That year,Caspar Lodge No 2 was organized with 45 members and ran for three years until professional attention attracted newcomers such as George Earle who donated land for an Agricultural fairgrounds which became known as Earle Park over time (later becoming Prairie View A&M University). In 1902–03, Mayor James Gairdner established streetlights throughout town using surplus white paint from local churches across Sheridan County to celebrate Pioneer Day; these lights remain operational today! On October 1st 1903, voters approved annexation of neighboring Sheridan County by Caspar Township making it one entity with voting rights from then on! "Pioneer Days" werecelebrated every two weeks during 1903 through 1909 inclusive with parade & fireworks displays along side games like "Boys' Life", "Tennis" & "Hockey". In 1905 however due to lack of funds earmarked for this purpose by then Mayor Gairdner Municipal improvements stopped abruptly leaving many residents without adequate lighting or facilities including low schools and churches which continue to experience disparities even into our current day! Priorities changed hands again following another fire which destroyed mostishouses within town limits including Palfrey’s Hotel so severe damage/losses forced abandonment of all but one structure preventing future Pioneer Days."
