There is some evidence that indicates early residents of Casper may have purchased firearms before 1876, but it's generally agreed that the first shooting galleries and gun shows in Casper took place on July 4th, 1876. The event was organized by a group of men who met to discuss how to deal with the increasing number of Pendleton County settlers who were moving into the area. It's generally thought that these gentlemen got together because they wanted to ensure safe passage for their own people and livestock as well as protect against any possible hostile encounters. That same year, a man named Hiram Chauncey built the first permanent home in Casper and started selling goods from his business at what is now Seventh Street and University Avenue. With this new development came increased opportunities for people to come and trade with local farmers, ranchers, and hunters. As word spread about this new town located just outside of Laramie on the edge of Sheridan County, others decided to move into Casper too, creating an ever-growing population which would continue to grow until well into the 20th century. This change not only helped reduce casualties amongst militia members however It also gave civilians a tool with which To defend themselves against potential threats outside their homes or communities should things go bad. Even today many people in eastern Wyoming still enjoy firing a rifle outdoors or hunting stress free thanks To such activities as target practice or NRA shoots which take place all over western Wyoming every November
