It lies on the Casper River and is part of the Casper-Bismarck Micropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Casper" is Dakota Sioux for "the place where the clouds come to rest." The first residents of Caspar were white fur trappers who came to the area in 1855. They named their settlement after Pierre-Jean Chouteau, marquis de la Fayette, who had journeyed through this region in 1824 as a member of an exploration party led by Kit Carson. On July 15, 1860, General Zachary Taylor founded what was then known as Fort Laramie east of present day Caspar on a bluff overlooking the river. A post office called Caspar was established in 1865. In 1871, the US government moved Fort Laramie westward along Union Creek so that it could be used as a military base during Indian Wars fought between settlers and Native Americans
