The name of the town comes from the name of a nearby mountain, Casper Mountain. The first people to live in what is now Casper were what are called the Fremont People. These people came from northern California and founded Campo del Fuego about 8 miles (13 km) northeast of what is now Casper on November 3, 1846. They were followed by other groups and villages that settled around them until all but one community disappeared during or before Anglo-American Contact in 1912 when most of Wyoming became part of Oklahoma Territory. In 1868 General George Armstrong Custer's 7th Cavalry unit spent two months encampment while they made their way to eastern Montana to fight against fur traders who had been harassing the Lakota Sioux Tribe along the Missouri River valley since 1854. In recognition of this service some land east of present day Sheridan was given to him as part of his Rancho de la Union grant which he named after himself and his brother John Atherton Custer and it still remains today as one of only a few remaining ranchos in that area today. Casper was platted on July 10, 1865 by commissioners appointed by President Andrew Johnson with additional land taken from Sweetwater County for the purpose including much lying north and east of Sheridan where farming began early on due to lack thereof elsewhere in western USA at that time due largely tofur-driven raids into Indian Country by Mormon settlers following Brigham Young's trek across North America in handcart company known as "the handcart race." As an result many residents Ridgway Valley renamed themselves after places near them such as Cuttlefish Creek just outside modern day Casper; Glidden (now Pampa) River within easy driving distance also took this name; numerous others simply shortened forms like Wagon Wheel Bend etcetera until nearly everyone had at least one local nameakes holdin' onto something significant relative t0 life hereabouts especially whilesevolving post-warUSA economy led many more folks eventually give up their names altogether over time through various social/professional conversions en masse finally settling down permanently somewhereesteadsteadyapocalypticTM
