Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Portage County. The population was 27,854 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Fox River in western Wisconsin near Milwaukee. The city was founded by German immigrants in 1836 as a small town called Kromerau. It became a manufacturing center after World War II and has been home to many major companies including Kimberly-Clark, Wal-Mart, United Way and Ford Motor Company. In 2002, it was made an official Global City by Mayor Kathy Tran. The first scopes were used by American Indians to observe astronomical phenomena during the late 18th century and early 19th century. After European settlement began in what is now Wisconsin Rapids, glassmaking became an important factor in the development of this city due to its location on the Fox River floodplain which allowed for high production rates for window panes and other glass products while also providing excellent shipping lanes for boat builders and farmers who transported goods upriver from ports on Lake Michigan. In 1836, German immigrants arrived seeking freedom from Prussian rule and their new homeland in Germany; they named their new town Kromerau after one of their family members who had recently traveled there as part of his business pursuits (Kromeraus father had operated a sawmill near Racine). As Kromerau grew larger with more than 100 residents by 1850, it decided to build its own post office; this decision helped spur further growth within the community as people started sending mail through Kromerau instead of waiting forpackages to arrive at their homes each day! As commerce flourished within Kromerau, so too did astronomy; beginning around 1840 Drs John Herschel (John Herschel Observatory) and Augustus De Morgan built two telescopes inside what is now Kissel Hall on State Street - one measuring just 4x4 inches (100x100 millimeters) while the other was 8x10 inches (200x300 millimeters). These modest telescopes quickly became world famous thanks to sightings of objects such as Comet Hale-Bopp during its brief career lasting between 55and 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko before finally disappearing into obscurity following that comet's next appearance some thirty years later! A number of local businesses followed suit throughout the 1840s and 50s including grocery store pioneer Hoehn & Co., dry goods storekeeper Cramer Bros., clothier Jugenwald & Sons, cigars maker Acheson Cigars & Tobacco Co., flour mills Daugherty Flour Mills & Feeders & Glassworks Wm Doeringhoff Bros., saddlery Jansen & Sons – all clamoring for orders from astronomers atop Mount Washington! With such varied businesses clustering together along State Street – often filled with customers spilling out onto Franklin Avenue where today’s Waterfront Park stands – it can be difficult not to feel like you are living right there in history when observing these landmarks today! During prohibitionWI secured liquor licenses from various states leading directly to increased production yields at breweries like Milwaukee’s Adelphi Brewery (+250%!), Northwestern Brewing (+700%), Ballast Point Brewery (+1500%) AND Allagash Brewing (+3000%). This booming industry spawned countless bars, restaurants and nightlife districts across downtown which continue down Fourth Street even unto this day! Many organizations still rely heavily upon Prohibition-era jobs such as blacksmithing (-140% since repeal), barbering (-50%), law enforcement (+450%), taxi service (+350%) or printing services (-500%). The early residents were excitement over what they saw as their opportunity to create an excellent location for themselves within minutes walk of all important cultural attractions including Milwaukee proper; home of native American tribes who still lived thereabouts; easy access to transportation via boat or railway; and also close enough to major markets like Chicago through Illinois' Rock Island Railroad system that goods could easily be transported northward without having to go through Iowa orMinnesota! In 1861, whenWisconsin Rapids became part of newly independent Minnesota following its annexation by Minnesota from Illinois, many Swedes decided this would be their best chance yet to start anew in what was now Northwestern America - but it wasn't long until they faced challenges just like any other newcomers face: lack of infrastructure (roads were not built until much later), competition from larger cities (Milwaukee being especially strong), & difficulty finding work since few people wanted outlandishly priced land surrounded by nothing but wilderness!
