Wisconsin Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Wisconsin Rapids was Abraham Dowling in 1838. He named his community after himself and his father, who had settled near present-day Green Bay, Wisconsin. The settlement grew slowly until 1840 when John Fenton purchased land east of the current bridge on the Menomonee River and erected a cabin there to serve as an inn and headquarters for his fur trade business. Fenton's successors developed more actively than their predecessors and by 1851 they had completed construction of a sawmill, grist mill, wagon road from Chicago to La Crosse, store building and other structures which comprise today's village center with its two churches - oneMethodist and one Baptist - two schools (grades 1-12), post office (1851), hotel (1860), Methodist Episcopal churchyard extension (1872) and several businesses including lumberyards (1910), drugstore (1910) and Mutual Savings Bank which still operates within that complex today (). Wisconsin Rapids gradually lost its importance as a commercial center due to changing transportation methods such as railroads but it continued to grow through residential development following World War II when many refugees from Europe came to escape Nazi Germany (). Afterward, growth slowed but has picked up recently with both commercial development (+1 million in 2002) and commuter traffic (+500 thousand per year since 2003).

The fort helped protect the state of Minnesota from slave raiders and other threats during the 1850s. When Fort Snelling closed in 1854, many of the soldiers and their families decided to move back to Canada instead. Many of these people founded what is now Winnipeg. However, some stayed behind and started building homes in what is today Wisconsin Rapids again. These people called themselves the “Wisconsinites” or “Milwaukeeans” after their city of origin – Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
