Wisconsin Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 21,857 at the 2010 census, making it the tenth-most populous city in Wisconsin and its county seat. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The history of Wisconsin Rapids goes back to 1834 when General Anthony Wayne founded a trading post on what is now State Street in town. The post served as an important link between eastern and western Wisconsin and was later moved to its current location on the north side of the river in 1854. The first settler in what would become Wisconsin Rapids was Daniel Drake, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin near what is now State Street and named it "Drake's Ferry." In 1840, John Haun shipped logs from Illinois through Drake's Ferry for use as building blocks for a new fort he called Fort Dearborn; this fort served as the nucleus of Milwaukee from 1847 until it was surrendered by US forces to Canada in 1865. In 1849, General David Dixon established trading posts at Racine and Manitowoc, which became key hubs for trade with eastern Minnesota and Iowa during the Gold Rush years (1848-55). In 1850, General James Lenthall organized an expedition under Lt.-Colonel Leland Stanford that explored much of present-day WI including parts of River Falls Township (now Wausau), Green Bay, Menomonee Falls Township (now Oshkosh), Kenosha County (now Milwaukee County), Superior County (now Marinette County) and Chippewa County (now Marquette County). One result of this exploration was the founding of Racine as a commercial center with several fine hotels/boardinghouses being built downtown over time: The Riverside Casino/Hotel/Gambling House opened July 14th 1861; The Golden Nugget Hotel & Casino Opened March 12th 1862; The Park Place Hotel & Gambling House Opened October 10th 1863.; The State Capitol Hotel&Gambling House opened December 12th 1865]. A local banking institution called First National Bank opened its doors on land donated by Captain George Stephenson on September 2nd 1860 just south of where present day Damen Avenue meets Watertown Road within minutes after Lieutenant Colonel Leland Stanford had given his report on his successful expedition Landsdowne Landing Station [see map ]. This bank helped spur development along Damen Avenue NW which continued until well into today's day with numerous large structures still standing such as: First National Bank Building 1961 - still standing 5 stories tall adjacent to damen avenue NW], Skanee Shopping Center 1913 - demolished but not replaced since it contained asbestos materials ], Kresge Drug Store 1912 - demolished but not replaced since it contained asbestos materials ], American Telephone Company warehouse 1923 - still standing ] First National Bank building continues to stand next to Damen Avenue Northwest . This structure originally housed Adams Insurance Company until 1978 when it became part of Edgewater Associates Inc., also known as First American Corporation..] Wisconsin Rapids began life as a small community centered around trade routes connecting eastern WI with central Minnesota and northern Iowa during America's Gold Rush years (). Trade goods transported through Drake’s Ferry were unloaded at Fort Dearborn before being sold or bartered off elsewhere before finally reaching their destination—the marketplaces near Racine or Manitowoc (). These markets allowed traders access to raw materials needed for manufacturing items such as flour, hay, lumber and other assorted goods that ended up becoming standard across much northeast United States (). Wisconsin Rapids is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The name Wisconsin Rapids comes from the rapids on the Kettle River which form its border with Racine County and east to Sheboygan County. The first permanent settler in Wisconsin Rapids was James Ahern who arrived in 1836. He founded a trading post on the south side of the Kettle River. Other early settlers included John Ellison, Isaac Beard, Ebenezer Strong and Levi Coffin. In 1858, Captain Augustus Bancroft established his wharf here after leaving his ship "Oregon" anchored at Chippewa Falls on Lake Michigan to trade with Native Americans for goods such as fur robes and guns. ThisBeginning of traffic along present day US Highway 9 helped make Wisconsin Rapids an important port for commerce during north-central Wisconsin's early days. In 1865, Jens Pohlmann purchased land east of present day Wisconsin Rapids from Dickstein & Moreland for $2,000 cash plus 10 acres (40 hectares) of timberland and he started what would become known as Pohlmann’s Brewery which produced beer since 1869 until it closed in 1954. Today’s brewery complex—the former Pohlmann home—remains one of downtown WI Rapids' most recognizable landmarks and is also property used by UW-Milwaukee football and basketball games as well as concerts by local bands throughout the summer months! Wisconsin Rapids experienced rapid growth following World War II when new industries such as automotive manufacturing began to develop here; trucking became increasingly important; air conditioning became popular; agriculture increased production but declined during the late 20th century due to overpopulation; then came difficult times with joblessness and economic recession beginning in 2007-2009 followed by several years of relative stability before another tough period starting in 2014 that has seen many job losses throughout much of northwesternWI

Wisconsin Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, on the east bank of the Milwaukee River. The population was 9,948 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wisconsin Rapids was founded in 1837 by Reuben Jenkins and others as a trading post on an ancient Indian trail connecting Green Bay with Menominee County, Michigan. The town became a major port for goods moving up and down the river between Milwaukee and Chicago during the 19th century. In 1853, it became home to one of two stations on the first transcontinental railroad, and in 1881 it became one of five communities along that line to be incorporated as towns. The city of Milwaukee annexed Wisconsin Rapids in 1964; however, its residents continued to identify themselves as residents of Wisconsin Rapids until 1981 when they were reincorporated into Milwaukee proper as part of a larger municipal reorganization which also included Racine and Waukesha counties
