The population was 9,031 at the 2010 census, making it the 2nd most populous town in Milwaukee County and 5th most populous town in all of Wisconsin. It is located on the Fox River near its confluence with the Menomonee River. The first white settlers in what is now Wisconsin Rapids were prospectors who discovered coal and other minerals while exploring for new land to settle in 1848. The townsite was laid out by John Sutter and others on October 15, 1852, when he founded Sutter's choice campground west of present-day downtown Wisconsin Rapids. The original name for the town was "Chippewa Falls". The first post office was established in 1855, and the name changed to "Wisconsin Rapids" on November 1, 1886. In 1925, it became part ofMilwaukee County. In 1957, it merged with neighboring town Racine to form Racine-Wisconsin Rapids Combined Statistical Area (CSA). At that time, it had a population of 26,869 people and an area of . On July 1st 2009, the CSA merged with neighboringtown Brownstown to become Brownstown-Wisconsin Rapids Combined Statistical Area (CSA), having a population of 31,595 people and an area of . In addition to its duties as county seat for Milwaukee County and home to many government offices including courthouse complex (built 1907), library (1896), jail (1910) and health department building (1914), Wisconsin Rapids also has several businesses which generate significant economic activity: International Paper Company; Midland Baking Company; United States Steel Corporation; Waukesha Paper Company; American Legion Post #2 annex; State Police Barracks No 2 & 3; First Methodist Church (& associated convent); United States Army Garrison - Camp Fort Knox where troops are quartered during World War II On July 1st 2009 Brownstown-Wisconsin Rapids combined statistical area lost its own local government status due to merging into Racine-Wisconsin Rapids Combined Statistical Area

Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1867 by General James Sherman and his wife, Julia Blythe Dodge Sherman, on the north bank of the Menominee River near present-day Wisconsin Rapids. Wisconsin Rapids grew rapidly due to its location on both sides of the river and its position as a major transportation hub for goods moving through Green Bay and toward Superior and Chicago. A large number of new buildings were erected during the late 19th century and early 20th century including a jail, an insane asylum, a post office, two churches (oneMethodist and one Baptist), numerous residences, a schoolhouse (now used as apartments), a garage, and several industrial sites such as Wabash Iron Works No. 1 which manufactured locomotives until 1938 and Wabash Coal Mine Nos. 2-5 which mined coal until 1957. In 1955 it became home to Chilton College when that institution moved from Racine to nearby La Crosse after losing its charter from Milwaukee University System following World War II). The town's original name was "Shermanstown." The first settler in what is now Wisconsin Rapids was James Sherman who arrived in 1867 from Illinois with his family. He named his new community after himself - "Wisconsin Rapids." By 1870 there were over 100 people living in the town with only four businesses active: shops, grocery stores, hotels/motels and carpentry/bricklaying operations run by local men or their families. The early years of this era were difficult for WIraprs because they lacked any water resources other than what came downriver from Lake Michigan through their communities on either side of the river mouth; therefore most everything had to be built with pumpskins or wagons drawn by horses or oxen pulled by carts! In 1882 general Washington Grant arrived at WIraper's request with troops stationed at Green Bay to help settle land purchases made during territorial days before Walker County was organized into section 7 West Baden township on November 6th, 1876 (!). Upon arrival he ordered all pumpkins put away as soon as possible so that he could begin grading land! One can still see some evidence OF these ancient pumpkin piles today along US 61 south of town limits! In 1886 captain John Prentice establishedWIraper's first store at 404 Main Street while others continued opening stores throughout those years up until 1903 when prohibition started making sales difficult even more so since no liquor license could be obtained without alcohol being sold across state lines! However Captain Prentice did manage to open one door for business prior to prohibition starting! Afterward many local men pooled their money together & purchased booze licenses themselves becoming known as "Prentice’s Packers"!!! Prohibition ran its course & business returned almost immediately thereafter but by then Captain Prentice had passed away (# 11 Main Street). During this time period many vessels docked here including paddle wheelers (Fulton Ferry boat landing) & huge barges called “Leeds” which would take items upriver like flour off boats bound for Superior while also carrying passengers overland! Some believe that Leeds may have been named after Captn John Prentice himself though we cannot confirm this conjecture!!! On December 5th 1893 three young boys aged 12-14 searching for candy near where Wabash Dam now stands stumbled upon America’s first commercially producible chocolate – melted chocolate bars being shipped into Whiteside Harbor City Limits via steamboats!!!!!!!!! From then on Wisconesan chocolates became synonymous with our beautiful little town WIraper’s favorite pastime!!!!!!!!
Wisconsin Rapids was founded in 1854 by the railroad company, Milwaukee and Wisconsin Railroad. The town started as a small stop on the railroad, but quickly grew into an important regional center. In 1881, Wisconsin Rapids became the county seat of Racine County. The city annexed the village of West Allis in 1907 and then the village of East Allis in 1912.
