Wisconsin Rapids is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Racine County. The population was 41,545 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Racine County after Milwaukee and Waukesha. It is also one of the largest cities in Wisconsin with a metropolitan area population over 100,000. The city has a rich rifle history dating back to 1836 when it was founded by James Fenton as Fort Fenton on the east side of the rapids near present-day downtown Wisconsin Rapids. In 1849, Captain John Smith discovered gold on nearby Mount Washington and madeWisconsin Rapids an important mining town at that time. By 1870, however, most of what became Wisconsin Rapids had been annexed into Chicago as part of its first wave of industrialization. In 1912, then Mayor George Hargrave placed a gun tax on all citizens to fund armories and other public safety measures for newly incorporated Racine County which included much of what is now Milwaukee County. This act was known as "The Gun Law". In 1976, Wisconsin Rapids voters passed ordinance No. 4609 requiring all handguns possessed or used in City limits be registered with the City Clerk no later than 24 hours before use; this ordinance remains in effect today (unless otherwise exempted by law). On November 5th 2014 two gunmen opened fire inside his home killing four people including himself before committing suicide outside just minutes after being caught by police who arrived on scene seconds after shots were fired

It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. Wisconsin Rapids was founded by Potawatomi Indians in 1784 as an orchard and cattle station on the eastern edge of what is now Milwaukee County. The area that makes up today's Wisconsin Rapids was settled by Germans in 1834 and became a city in 1848 when it amalgamated with other towns in Milwaukee County. The city of Racine merged with Wisconsin Rapids on January 1, 2002, creating a second municipality with a total population of 12,471 (including 7,903 residents of Racine). The two municipalities are separate but share most aspects such as services and infrastructure except for transportation which is shared between both municipalities. In addition to its downtown core which houses many local businesses and cultural attractions such as the Racine Museum District and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's School of Veterinary Medicine campuses, Wisconsin Rapids also includes several smaller villages including Chilton Village (population: 3), Kettle Brook Village (population: 2), Elmira Heights (population: 3) and Mount Pleasant (population: 1). As one of only four cities within 25 miles (40 km) of Milwaukee without any incorporated areas - making it easy for people to get around -Wisconsin Rapids remains an important economic center for southeastern Wisconsin despite its small size relative to other communities within that region. With nearly 50% employed full time year-round according to 2018 Census estimates, agriculture remains the dominant sector accounting for 61%of employment while professional & technical services make up 28%. retail trade employs just 8%of workers while manufacturing provides 17%. All told these sectors account for about 60%of all jobs created over the last 10 years in nearby counties

In 1792, George Washington became the first U.S. president to own a rifle when he bought one from a local farmer named Samuel Adams at Mount Vernon plantation near Alexandria, Virginia. Firearms had not yet become commonplace in America as they were still considered prohibitively expensive for most civilians at this point; rifles were instead owned by honored members of society such as cavalrymen and artillerymen. By 1800, handguns had started making up a greater percent of civilian ownership than rifles did in America; however, handguns remained potentially dangerous items subject to legal restrictions until 1871 when New York State passed the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted Americans the right “to keep and bear arms” for self-defense purposes only if they could do so without infringing on other rights.] In 1903 John Brown was shot dead after trying to surrender his revolver at Harpers Ferry Armory in West Virginia during the Scranton Rebellion.[Brown was carrying an unloaded revolver with him when he surrendered.] In 1934 Adolf Hitler signed Executive Order 1007 banning all automatic firearms within Reichsland (Nazi Germany). After World War II, many more people started moving into Downtown WI Rapids which made it an increasingly crowded and noisy place with no streetlights or sidewalks. However, due to efforts spearheaded by Mayor John Ducharme and City Manager Marty Kriegel, things have started to change for DowntownWIRapids in recent years with new development coming on Race Street between State Street and First Avenue (the current business district), as well as new housing developments on Second Avenue south of State Street. In addition, a major renovation project has been ongoing since 2008 that has added several thousand square feet of retail space to what is currently called North Park Place - a key part of DowntownWIrapids revitalization effort which has seen many small businesses moved into what used to be former factories and warehouses along Race Street.
