Wisconsin Rapids is a city in Adams County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 44,839 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1872 by Norwegian immigrants. It is the county seat ofAdams County. Wisconsin Rapids was first settled in 1872 by Norwegian immigrants when they arrived on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan as part of the Great Lakes Settlers. They named their settlement "Wisconsin Rapids", after then-Governor John C. Frémont's home state of Wisconsin. The town began to grow rapidly and soon had a population of over 1,000 people; it became the largest town on the Upper Peninsula and one of the most important commercial and industrial centers on Lake Superior until its post-industrial decline in the 1990s. The early residents were drawn to their excellent water access and available land for agriculture, manufacturing, fishing and other businesses that helped keep their community thriving well into the 20th century. Today, some remainingaments from those days include: Wahl’s Market (now a restaurant), which operated from 1915 to 1981; Dells Brewing Company (now defunct); US Steel Works (now known as ArcelorMittal); Pioneer Cabinetry & More;and numerous small businesses catering to local needs such as plumbing services, real estate agents/brokers/tenants management services, auto repair shops and more. In Wisconsin Rapids, the history of firearms is intertwined with the history of businesses and families. The first gun store in town was established in 1836 by a group of farmers. It was called the Rifle House and Ammunition store. The business continued to be operated until it closed in 1841. The next Gun Store opened up in 1846, and it was called the Armoury store. It was located on State Street near Water Street. Thisgun store continued to operate until it closed in 1851. In 1862, a gunsmith named Jesse Wagoner opened up shop on First Avenue near State Street. Wagoner’s shop served as a center for gun sales and repairs throughout the region. Wagoner also owned several other businesses including an bakery, blacksmithing forge, wagon repair garage, and a farmstead complete with barn, cows, pigs, and chickens. ) In 1865-1866 Wagoner & Son built a new factory on the site of their old Armoury store building which they used for many years as their main manufacturing plant for rifles/ammunition etc ) In 1889-1890 Saginaw Arms Co., Inc built an armory at 515 N Main St which became known as "The Arsenal" ) On November 3rd 1905 (the day after United States v Browning), the city of Wisconsin Rapids incorporation passed an ordinance authorizing rifle ranges within city limits ) On December 12th 1907 (the day after United States v Kahr), Assembly Bill No 992 authorizedWisconsin Rapids residents to own shotguns without registration or license ) On January 1st 1911 (the day after National Firearms Act took effect), state law gave all citizens capable of owning handguns permission to purchase shotguns )(This regulation did not take effect until later that year when legislation changed this provision.) ) In 1912-1913 city council voted to start charging citizens for handguns
Wisconsin Rapids is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,691 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Wisconsin Rapids first appeared on maps in 1838 when it was included in the towns of Flambeau and Vernon on a map created by John Fitch. The name "Wisconsin Rapids" was given to the location by General David Dixon during his Expedition against the Menominee Nation in 1846 while he was stationed at what is now Wausau, Wisconsin. The name has been used ever since as an anglicized form of "Wisconson", which is how it appears on most maps today. The town began to grow rapidly after it became connected toMilwaukee through a railroad line in 1854. The town's growth continued until 1910 when it lost its status as a city and merged with neighboring Racine to become one large municipality known today as Racine County, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Rapids was founded by the Menominee people in 1833 as an agency for the new government of Wisconsin. The town grew quickly, and in 1857 it became a city. In 1893, the city annexed the adjacent village of Northfield.
