In 1902, due to advances in transportation and communication technology such asradio andthe telephone system, WIldstream Avenue (now State Street) was renamed Highway K after Governor Stevens Hawley's request that it be so named to honor him for his support of highway construction during his time as governor from 1901 to 1905. In 1916, Wisconsin Rapids became one of only two towns within Kenosha County to have their own school district which continued until 1997 when all school districts within Kenosha County were merged into the Milwaukee School District #1

The name of the town comes from its location on the river between Two Rivers and Waukesha counties. The Town of Wisconsin Rapids was organized in 1836 as a result of the Treaty of Fort Laramie between the U.S. government and the Potawatomi people. It was named for General Anthony Wayne, who fought in the Mexican-American War and won fame as an American general during that conflict. Wisconsin Rapids became an incorporated village in 1854 after it voted to become one of four townships within Outagamie County. In 1904, it merged with two other villages to form the current town of Wisconsin Rapids. The first post office at Wisconsin Rapids opened on October 10, 1836, and continued operation until November 3, 1886 when it was closed due to lack of postal service in that area at that time. According tothe 2010 census,1,912 people lived in Wisconsin Rapids proper while 614 residents lived scattered throughout six villages which made up thetown: Apple Valley (now part of Racine), Black Earth (now part of Milwaukee), Brown Deer (now part of Green Bay),• Custom House Pointe (now part of Menomonee Falls), Frankfort Heights (now part of Stevens Point)• Gull Lake Village (now part of Oshkosh)• La Crosse Landing Village (Now Manitowoc). Of these 614 residents only 515 were counted living within their original village boundaries; Apple Valley had 1 resident living outside its original boundaries; Black Earth had 2 residents living outside its original boundaries; Brown Deer had 4 residents living outside its original boundaries; Custom House Pointe had 1 resident living outside its originally defined borders; Frankfort Heights had 0 residents living inside their original village boundaries; Gull Lake Village had 0 residents living inside their originally defined limits while La Crosse Landing Village only counted 1 resident located within its own boundaries
Wisconsin Rapids was a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east side of the Milwaukee River. The population was 9,811 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Milwaukee County. The first permanent settler in what is now Wisconsin Rapids was James Auerbach and his wife Catharine who arrived in 1834 from Germany. They built a cabin on a bluff overlooking the river and started to grow crops and raise livestock. soon they had a store, post office and schoolhouse which served as their home until 1840 when they moved to an area near where their current house stands today. Auerbach's son Martin Auerbach also farmed here for many years before moving to Racine, WI in 1865 where he became one of the leading attorneys there before dying in 1902. His son John Auerbach took over his father's farm operation until his death in 1924; he then sold it to Harry Benziger who operated it until 1957 when it reverted back to Benziger family ownership and continues currently being operated as a dairy farm with Angus beef cattle
