Whitewater is a town in the Milwaukee metropolitan area, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 30,651 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the waterway running through it—the whitewater River. The first Europeans to visit Whitewater were French traders and missionaries in 1634-35. They named it "Nova Zeelandia" after a location on Nova Scotia. In 1836, Congress passed an act annexing Racine County to Milwaukee; Whitewater was not included in this annexation. The first permanent settler in what is now Whitewater was John Maynard Foster who arrived around 1846. He built a log cabin near present day Green Bay and called it White Water Cabin (later known as Foster's Landing). Mr. Foster's family removed to Racine in 1852 and his cabin became the nucleus of what would become Whitewater Village. In 1862, Isaac Morse moved from Waukesha to begin production of flour at his new mill on the east side of the river just north of where today's village stands. Morse renamed his mill "Whitewater Mill", which stuck until 1955 when it was changed back to its original name by deed restriction owners Perry & Rigdon exceptionally during that year's grain embargo due to World War II shortages of cereals/flour products following Japan's surrender). In 1870 Republican candidate for governor George Stephenson ran against incumbent General David Woolley because Woolley had supported railway construction through most of Wisconsin including Whitewater; Stephenson won by over 100 votes out of more than 3 million cast statewide due largely to support among farmers who argued that railroad construction would improve their access to markets and jobs outside their farms while reducing competition from other agriculturalists within their own communities which they saw as threats both economic and political stability within their rural areas throughout much of North America at that time etc.). Whitewater is a town in the county of Racine, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Whitewater is named after the Standing Rock Sioux tribe's leader, Sitting Bull. The town was founded in 1852 by John C. Whitewater and his wife Anna May Thorndike Whitewater as a farming community on the east bank of the Menomonee River between Green Bay and Milwaukee. The first white settler inWhitewater was Jesse James Bacon who arrived in 1853 from Ohio with his family and began to farm land around what is now known as South High School. In 1855, George Aiken purchased some of Bacon's land and erected a cabin here which he called "the White House". Aiken served as sheriff of Racine County from 1857 to 1861 and also ran for office several times as a Democrat. He died in office at age 72 years old on January 25, 1865 at his home on West Park Avenue in Racine (now known as North Fourth Street). In 1856, Jens Christensen Pohl established an sawmill near present-day South High School with twelve logs per day from the nearby Menomonee River bed. By 1860, Pohl had built two other sawmills along with warehouses to support these mills; one at present-day University Drive and one just south of downtown Racine where Wabash Railroad lines crossed over Depot Road into their property for storage during construction projects such as new streetcar tracks that were being built downriver parallel to them (the tracks still run through present-day Racine). Pohl also grew corn and potatoes on his farmstead but no water could be found to irrigate these crops so he imported watercasks from Canada which he delivered using horse cars until 1870 when he replaced this system with a pipeline installed by subscription under contract fromMilwaukee Water Works Company . According to local historian DraytonPublished: "Pohl became an entrepreneur not only because early businesses attracted settlers but also because river transportation became available following railroad construction." In 1862 Pohl mortgaged most of his businesses including his sawmills (which were acquired by American Can Company) to secure passage through customs for 300 tons of saltpetre needed for munitions production during World War I; however when tariffs rose following America's entry into war, Pohl lost most of his money so he again entered into debtors' prison in 1919 before finally becoming bankrupt three years later while selling off many assets including interests in two dams located upstream across Menomonee Rapids National Recreation Area - one near Schererville (now Crystal Lake) while another dam operated by Wisconsin Power & Light company abutted Manitowoc County line about six miles downstream just north ofpresent day Brown Deer]]. His bankruptcy left behind many questions about how whitewater got its name." After World War II ended industry shifted back towards agriculture although whitewater continues
On July 1, 1871, the first phase of the Milwaukee-Waukesha Railroad was completed. The railroad ran from Milwaukee to Waukesha and soon became a major transportation artery in the region. In 1901, Wisconsin voters approved a new state constitution that provided for an election of a State Senate and Assembly. This gave rise to Wisconsin's bicameral legislature which was first elected on November 3, 1901. The construction of the Milwaukee-Waukesha Railroad led to increased population growth in the area around Whitewater and Racine County. In 1912, Racine County was formed from parts of Milwaukee County.
