Whitewater, Wisconsin is home to some of the most well-known firearms museums in the United States. The museum located in the town of Whitewater has a collection of over 800 firearms, including rifles, shotguns, handguns and more. The museum also has an exhibit on gun slings history that is open to the public. The firstguns were designed and built by Captain James Fenton in 1839. Captain Fenton was known for his innovative designs which included a rifle sling which could be used both as a weapon and as a tool. In 1846, Captain Fenton's son submitted a patent for what would become the first shotgun. The shotgun was designed to fire buckshot instead of shot and it became popular among farmers and hunters across America. Whitewater is a small town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Whitewater is located on the east bank of the Rock River near its confluence with the Fox River. The first Europeans to reach what is now Whitewater were French traders who called it "Lac du Lac", meaning "Lake of the Lilies". In 1834, James K. Polk explored and mapped much of what is nowWisconsin and named it for General John Custer's battle at Little Big Horn in 1876. In 1875, General George Armstrong Custer led his Seventh Cavalry against Native Americans near present-day Whitewater. Many Indians died or were captured including Chief Joseph and his band of five hundred warriors known as The Black Hills Sioux (later classified as a federally recognized tribe). The area around present-day Whitewater was strategically important because it lay between two major routes connecting Chicago with Milwaukee and Prairie du Chien with Lake Superior; this location also made it vulnerable to attack by Indian raiders from Canada and Minnesota. A group of men led by Captain Julius Neuman purchased land adjacent to today's village in 1877 from David Sibley for $3 per acre ($ in ). They began building a log cabin on their farmstead which became known as White Water Landing because of its easy access to the river below. In 1878, they developed an agricultural enterprise that produced hay, oats, cornmeal, wheat flour and cheese; their products were shipped directly to Chicago via boatload across the Rock River from where they had been unloaded on opposite banks of the river. One year later they erected a post office at their landing which served them until 1903 whenriver transportation improved enough for mail service to be established through Racine County instead Whitewater residents regularly participated in local government until 1945 when all white residents were Welcome but American Indian Tribe members were not allowed within 100 miles due to reservations created under Executive Order 10634

The Weapon Slingsman's Manual (1914) states " Gun sling equipment has been in use by hunters and fishermen for centuries, but only recently has it become known as an effective means of carrying firearms." In 1876, entrepreneur James Maynard developed the first practical gun sling. He patented his invention in 1881. However, due to patent infringement, Maynard was forced to sell his invention to Andrew Weidner for US$1 million. Weidner made improvements on Maynard's design and marketed his sling under the name "Weidmann" until 1906 when he sold the rights back to James Maynard for US$3 million. The modern day gun sling originated with Colonel John Biddle who invented an improved gun sling in 1892 which became known as the Biddle Gun Sling. This original gun sling consisted of a metal frame with two webbed straps that connected at one end and held a firearm vertically while being swung around its handlebars. When used properly, this type ofgun sling allowed shooters to fire projectiles such as arrows with ease because they were not constrained by having their firearm elevated above their head - instead they could simply move it about so that it could be aimed at their target quickly and easily

Whitewater is a town in the Whitewater River valley of Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,478 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Eau Claire–River Falls Micropolitan Statistical Area. Whitewater was named after the river and its tributaries. The first Europeans to visit what is now Whitewater were fur traders and explorers in the 18th century. A trading post was established at present-day Whitewater by Pierre Marquette in 1779. By 1836, settlers had built a few buildings on the east side of the river because it offered more fertile land than on the west side where there was less water available for farming purposes. The early residents were farmers who raised corn, wheat, soybeans, and other crops; later they developed oil shale mining operations and lumber mills. In 1855, James Kapp purchased 2,000 acres (800 hectares) near present-day Eau Claire from John Wolkentin for $10 per acre ($ ). He began to farm this land and laid out roads and stores; in 1862 he opened a hotel called "The White Horse" which served as a stopping point on his timber trail network that ran through much of central Wisconsin. In 1870 he built another hotel called "The Star" which became an important stop on stagecoach routes through central Wisconsin during winter months when snow covered most of Canada or northern America. In 1872 Kapp donated 5 acres (2 ha) along with all rights to build a schoolhouse in memory of his wife Lucy Kapp (1822–93). After her death in 1893 he continued to give away schoolhouses until his death in 1912 at age 87 years old (). A post office called Whitewater was established at present-day Whitewater by Alfred Sargent in 1865; it remained open until 1903 . When railroads arrived in northwestern Wisconsin during the late 19th century they brought with them new industries such asaching for logs and manufacturing goods from local lumberyards; these towns grew rapidly but faced many difficulties including financial instability caused by overbuilding and lack of control over their own destiny
The first mention of the name "Whitewater" can be traced back to 1795 when treaty negotiations were taking place between France and the United States. The French wanted to rename a part of the Wisconsin River, called the Richelieu, after Louis XVIII, the king of France at that time. However, U.S. negotiators objected because they felt it was an inappropriate name for a river located in America. They suggested calling it the Whitewater River instead. This naming convention continued until 1845 when Congress changed the name from Richelieu to Whitewater in honor of James K. Polk, then-president of the United States.
