Whitewater is a town in Whitewater County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 930 at the 2010 census. The town of Whitewater was founded in 1847 by German immigrants. It was named for the brook that flows through it. The first white settlers were Germans who arrived in 1848. They built a cabin on the banks of the river and started to chase away all the Indians who lived there. In 1850, they built a log cabin on a hill and named it "Whitewater". They grew crops and raised livestock until around 1870 when they began using power tools to build houses. In 1904, John Prentice bought land near the present-day town of Whitewater and started to develop it into an agricultural community with high-speed steamboats running between Whitewater and Superior. By 1907, he had developed three villages: "Kippenheim", "Goodhue", and "Wrightville". These villages were each home to about 100 people. When World War I broke out, Prentice decided to send his boats upriver so he could help provide munitions for the war effort from his vessels. However, during World War II, he lost most of his boats due to enemy action; only two remain today as tourist attractions: one is moored at Kippenheim Landing Site Museum ( upstream of Goodhue), while another is located at Wrightville Landing Site Museum ( downstream of Bad Lake). However, because much of this history has been lost or forgotten over time, whitewater has come to be known mainly as a place where fishing can be enjoyed without fear of injury or loss
