In the early 1800s, Whitewater was a small town in Wisconsin. It was known for its gun shops and its firearms. One of the most famous firearms stores in Whitewater was The Gun Shop, which operated from 1853 to 1875. The Gun Shop was run by George Armstrong Coker and his brother-in-law, Amos Kendall. They were among the first retailers to sell rifles and shotguns in Wisconsin. In 1868, they opened a second store in Milwaukee called The Armoury. The Gun Shop became one of the leading firearm stores in America after it opened its doors on February 12th, 1853. It is said that GACC encouraged others to start selling firearms in order to keep up with his store’s success. After years of success, The Gun Shop closed its doors on May 17th, 1975 due to economic difficulties faced by many retailers at that time. However, their legacy lives on as one of Wisconsin’s most iconic businesses dating back to the 1800s.

Whitewater has been home to several professional sports teams over its history: Teamsters Local 798 played their last game there on December 11th 2006 after more than 60 years; Menomonee Falls High School's men's soccer team won back-to-back state championships in 2009 and 2010; Menomonee Falls' women’s water polo team reached national championships in 2011 and 2012; Aurora University also had an NCAA Division I athletic program located at their Park District campus until they vacated their facility due to budget cuts late last year; Whitewater Golf Course went through significant renovation which started in fall 2014 including new tee times (now available online) In November 2013 federal prosecutors announced that they were probing allegations made against then-Mayor Barrett related to his role with outside interests between September 1st2011 and January 8th2012 while he served as Mayor of Whitewater
