Augustus Prentice shot a number of rounds at a white bear near the present day intersection of State Highway 10 and County Road C3. The rounds did not hit the animal but created some noise which scared it off and caused it to run into a nearby bush where it died from its wounds (Rosenberry). Over time, guns began to become more important in warfare and people started using them for protection instead of hunting animals (Ludden & Ludden). Bullet production increased significantly during World War I because war became more serious (Holtzman). By 1918, there were over 4,000 companies manufacturing bullets in America alone(Heiser). In 1875, an act was passed that created Racine County; Whitewater was included within it on January 1, 1876. Manufacturing began soon thereafter with primary production being textiles such as fabric and sheet metal products until 1978 when manufacturing shifted to trucks and cars due to increased demand from industry outside of Racine County The Whitewater Dam opened in 1945 as one of Wisconsin's first hydroelectric power plants; it continues to serve Racine County today In 1957, raccoon management started near present-day High Point Road which led to development around that corner later named Menomonee Falls In 1962, Pope John XXIII visited Racine County during his pastoral visit; he gave a speech at Mount Pleasant Catholic Church which helped spur economic development
