Whitewater quickly became known for its great fishing resources, and the company continued to grow. In 1909, Whitewater merged with another company, Fenton Navigation Company, which made it one of the largest companies in Milwaukee. The merger allowed the company to expand into new markets and create jobs. In 1954, Whitewater merged with General Dynamics Corporation and became one of the leading defense contractors in America. The company continues to be a major player in American industry today.
Whitewater is a town located in the Whitewater River valley of southwestern Wisconsin. The population was 3,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Racine-Kokomo, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1854 by farmers from Ohio and Indiana who were looking for new land to settle after leaving their home state during the 1840s gold rush. The community grew rapidly due to its location and access to water resources. In 1872, Whitewater became a city with its own government and mayor. It experienced some growth during World War II as many people came to work in the munitions plants in nearby Kewaunee and Rockford. However, following the war, Whitewater declined significantly until it regained some lost popularity in the late 1990s when it became a popular tourist destination for rafting, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. Today, Whitewater continues to grow as a cultural center with several art galleries and restaurants along with numerous local schools and parks that offer active programming such as baseball leagues and soccer tournaments. Additionally, there is an annual music festival which features local bands playing throughout downtown on Memorial Day Weekend

Whitewater is a small town in the town of Whitewater, Wisconsin, United States. It was once part of Racine County, and it is now a part of Dane County. The population was 684 at the 2000 census. The name "Whitewater" comes from the Ojibwe word wahi-towái meaning "place where the water flows." The first permanent settler in what is now Whitewater was Nicholas fur trader George Washington Cabot in 1835. He built a cabin near present-day Whitewater on his farm called Cabin Creek. A post office called metamorphosed from cabot to whitewater around 1855 because the name for both places had different meanings until one person guessed they were related. In 1866, John Cushman built a sawmill on Big Bayou which became one of Racine County's leading lumber mills. In 1870, he also founded a store that still operates as The Cushman Store today. In 1875, Wm Hickey bought land at what is now eastern edge of town from Nicholas Fur Trader Cabot and started to build a dam to create Big Bayou reservoir (now known as Green Bay). In 1886, Andrew Jenson leased land north of present-day Whitwater from Wm Hickey for $10 an acre and started construction on what would become Jenson Dam #2 which impounded Big Bayou River downstream from Jenson Dam #1. This dam created Lake Michigan across much of what is now Racine County and parts of Dane County
The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders in the mid-1600s. In 1768, the British built a fort on the Wisconsin River and began trading with the local natives. The first mention of whitewater is from an account written by Captain John Callbeck in 1779. Whitewater was named for the flowing water that filled its fens, which made it difficult for animals to navigate. By 1812, there were settlements around Whitewater and Racine County had a population of about 100 people. In 1834, a group of Mormons traveled downriver from Iowa to looking for new land to settle. They found some good land but decided against moving because of the heavy Native American raids upriver at that time. In 1836, Congress passed legislation establishing Racine County as part of Wisconsin Territory and giving it its current name – Whitewater County – after then-Senator James Krieger (R-WI). On January 1, 1840, Racine County had a population of 708 people and included all of present-day Whitewater, Milwaukee Township and parts of Waukesha and Ozaukee Counties. The county seat was in Racine until 1886 when it moved to downtown Milwaukee. Whitewater was home to one of America’s first aluminum smelters during World War II; however, production ceased after 1945 because aluminum prices dropped precipitously due to postwar economic recessionations caused by Japanese military aggression in Asia and South America. One early developer who attempted industrialization near Whitewater was George Stephenson who built his locomotive factory on Menomonee Falls Boulevard in 1944 before moving operations westward into Sauk Rapids Township in 1946; this site is now known as Stephenson Industries Incorporated..
