In 1854, white traders discovered oil shale near Whitefish Bay and began drilling for oil. They soon became successful and leased the land around Whitefish Bay for refine their products. The town of Whitefish was founded in 1902 to serve as a manufacturing center for these products. The town grew rapidly and by 1920 it had a population of over 1,500 people. It became an important port for commerce in the Midwest and exported agricultural commodities such as corn, beans, flour, cheese, lumber, potatoes and dairy products. The town also manufactured radios, phonographs and other electronic equipment. In 1969 it was renamed Whitefish Bay after James Worthy Fitzgerald Jr., who had led the efforts to bring industrial development to the area.
Whitefish Bay was first settled by Norwegians in the mid 1800s. The area now known as Whitefish Bay was part of the Sauk and Fox Reservation until 1854, when it became part of the Wisconsin Territory. The initial settlers were primarily Norwegian-Americans, but a small number of Swedes also arrived in the early years. The town of Whitefish Bay was founded in 1857, and soon developed into a small commercial center. It remained an important community through the late 19th century and into the 20th century. In 1957, Whitefish Bay became an incorporated town. During World War II, WhitefishBay played a significant role in the war effort by providing goods and services to local soldiers and civilians. In 1946, Mayor John Prentice presented his plan for developing Whitefish Bay which called for building a new shopping mall located on Main Street east of town square. This proposal failed to gain approval from the town council, but eventually led to its successful implementation three years later when construction began on what is now known as “Prentice Plaza”
