Whitefish Bay is a small town located in the town of Whitefish, Wisconsin, United States. The community was founded in 1849 and was named for General John A. White. The area that now makes up Whitefish Bay was originally land owned by the Menominee Nation. In 1868, the United States government acquired this land as part of the Homestead Act. As a result of this acquisition, white settlers began to arrive in Whitefish Bay. By 1890, there were over 100 people living in the community. The population continued to grow until World War II when it declined sharply due to the war and economic depression. After the war, the population increased again due to migration from other parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota. However, by 1990, white residents had all but disappeared and the community had a population of just 47 people. Since its foundation, Whitefish Bay has been home to many businesses including a fish market and grocery store as well as several schools and churches. One of the most important aspects of these businesses is their relationship with local farmers who have helped contribute significantly to local economies throughout history.
