Whitefish Bay is a small town in the town of Whitefish, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kenosha County municipality. The first white people to visit what is now Whitefish Bay were traders from Michigandale on Lake Superior in 1795. They named it "Wabasha", after one of their village's chiefs. For many years this was the only name given to the bay and its surroundings. In 1851, local farmers began raising corn and other crops on a large area of land now within Whitefish Bay limits. By 1870, these farmers had created a small community called "Bay City". In 1916 they renamed it Whitefish Bay after General John J. Pershing because he had played an important role in World War I as Commander-in-Chief of American Expeditionary Forces in Europe and helped make victory possible for Allied forces there. The community slowly grew until by 1940 it had a population of 486 people; by 1960 that number had grown to 1,848 people and by 1970 it reached 2,027 people. After economic hard times hit the bay during the late 1980s and early 1990s, however, growth slowed significantly until 2001 when jobs started moving back into the area following deregulation of business activity in America which led to increased tourism throughout Wisconsin.. A major draw to Whitefish Bay has always been its fishing potential with both fresh (unfished) and salt (canned) catches available year-round from various species including Northern Pike, Walleye, Rainbow trout and perch. Aspects unique to this region include ice cold water temperatures (−25 degrees Fahrenheit), tight shorelines with few islands making retrieval difficult but also providing excellent conditions for spotters who are able to find fish up close without cover or obstruction

The bay was named for Whitefish Lake which lies to the east and was stocked with whitefish by early French explorers. The first permanent settlers arrived in 1795 and began trading with the local natives. By 1825, there were over a hundred residents living at Whitefish Bay. The fur trade played an important role in the development of Whitefish Bay as a commercial center. In 1854, Captain John Rodgers founded Rodgers Navigation Company which ran a line from Green Bay to Manitowoc. This company became very successful and helped make WhitefishBay one of the leading fur-trading towns in America. As American industry grew more complex, so did its needs for vessels and supplies. In 1916, General Motors Corporation built their largest factory yet in Kiel and needed large quantities of steel reinforcements for their products. To meet this demand, GM ordered two ships from Whitefish Bay Shipbuilding Company which became known as “The Big Two” because they processed such vast amounts of steel at once (the USS Milwaukee (LPD-5) was also built here). Later on during World War II, WhitefishBay saw some really significant activity when shipyards were used to build submarines and other naval weapons like aircraft carriers (the USS Hornet(CV-9)) . After that war ended, most manufacturing stopped until recently when several companies have relocated to WhitefishBay including Apple Inc., Intel processors etc.. Today it rests mostly within agriculture but it still has some sizeable industries like fishing & processing or shipping services
Whitefish Bay was named for whitefish, a type of fish found in the bay. The first permanent settler in the area was John Cook, who arrived in 1824. Cook and his family built a log cabin on the bay's north shore.
