Whitefish Bay is a small town in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,022 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Appleton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Whitefish Bay is located on the Fox River and about 15 miles north of the mouth of the Wiscona River. The community was founded in 1854 by Ole Hansen and his family as a landing for barges bringing goods from Chicago to Green Bay. The first post office was established in Whitefish Bay in 1857, and it remained open until 1959. The harbor served as an important trade depot during the early days of transportation through Outagamie County. In 1865, Norwegian immigrants Hjalmar Heidal and Thorolf Olsen began farming here. They named their farm "Whitefish," after their ship "Discovery" which had anchored at Whitefish Harbor while they transported cargo between Chicago and Milwaukee. A school was built here in 1870, but it closed soon afterwards because there were not enough children to attend it. In 1872, local businessmen Wm Muhlenkamp and George Kapp bought land near Whitefish Harbor to begin developing it into a town site that would become known as Whitefish Bay
