The first white people to settle in Whitefish Bay were three brothers who came overland from Illinois in 1854 and started what would become the Whitefish Bay Company. They named their settlement after their favorite bay on Lake Michigan and built a trading post there. The company failed but the brothers kept trying until they founded the Whitefish Bay Navigation Company in 1875 which became one of the largest shipping companies in America. The company's heyday came during World War II when it transported troops and supplies to Europe. After the war ended, Whitefish Bay lost its importance as a shipping port but it still retains some significance as a community because of its many churches, businesses, and schools that have been located here since then. Today, Whitefish Bay has about 1,800 residents and it is home to several churches including First Methodist Church (founded 1886), Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church (founded 1865), Mt Carmel Baptist Church (founded 1888), Lutheran church (1892), United Methodist church (1901-2002), Catholic church (1902-2003) and Byzantine Rite Orthodox church(2005). In the 1860s, white fish were being caught in Whitefish Bay and early fishermen built their homes there.
