This period saw many advances for Weston including becoming one of only two towns to be home to a Carnegie library system when it opened its doors in 1907;and being selected as site for Milwaukee's only electric streetcar line when it began service in 1911; becoming part of Racine County after splitting from Milwaukee County; annexing neighboring towns La Crosse and Menomonee Falls;; establishing itself as an agricultural center with growing production of dairy products; becoming home to Northwestern University (now UW-Milwaukee). Slavery ended within five years following American Civil War victory over Confederate forces during the Battle at Camp Douglas on July 4th, 1865. During World War II, about 2% of all manufacturing jobs were involved with aircraft manufacturing at RAF Advanced Aviation Plant No 7 west side Road southwest of town limits near Racine Lake – this plant produced Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter planes used by U.S Air Forces over Europe and Asia during World War II
