By 1886, when Wisconsin became a state, West Bend had merged with neighboring Racine to formWI's third largest city and cultural center serving an estimated 100,000 people within a radius of 10 miles (16 km). In 1907–08, construction began on WI's first large waterworks project - Milwaukee Water Works – which would eventually become one of America's leading public utilities. In 1916, during World War I, West Bend played host to America's largest airshow ever staged – Air Force One made its debut over WI's capital city! Winfold Township was organized around this time and soon became home to some high-technology businesses such as Starburst Instruments & Equipment Inc., which manufactured electronic equipment until 1997; however no trace remains today of this company’s early days or employees! In 1957–58—the then-new era of suburban growth began to take hold in WI with residents moving away from downtown cores such as Milwaukee and Racine towards newer subdivisions east or west of Interstate 94 near Lake Michigan shoreline! However urban revival continued for several decades afterwards with denser populations coming back into older inner-ring suburbs like Milwaukee proper while rural areas outsideWI shrunk or disappeared altogether! On July 1st 1990—the last day before Wisconsin transitioned from a presidential election year system (which used electoral vote only) to an instant runoff election system (also known as “ negotiated voting”), citizens voted in a special referendum to change our name from "Wisconsin Rapids" to "West Bend"! This name change came about because many residents felt that "Wisconsin Rapids" sounded too similar both geographically and linguistically to other nearby cities like Racine and Madison! It has been said that without any major natural disasters happening during this time (like floods etc.),WI might not have undergone rapid suburban growth like we did but instead may still be called "The Land Of Lakes", particularly if natural disasters continue occurring along/near Lake Michigan causing significant loss/damage!!
