West Bend, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,822 at the 2010 census, making it the thirteenth most populous municipality in Wisconsin and the second most populous community in Racine County after Racine. It is also one of two towns in Racine County that are not wards of Milwaukee County - the other being Easton. The first settlers to what is now West Bend were French Canadians who arrived from Canada during the 17th century. In 1836, a group of United States citizens migrated from Illinois to start a new life in what would become West Bend. The town was platted on December 12, 1836 by Nicholas Hennepin and James Kline under their name of "New Glarus." The name originated with an incident where Hennepin's cattle ran out of water near present-day Waukesha and he named his new settlement for "Glarus," meaning "water" in German. In 1870s, businesses began to grow around flour milling and agriculture; these days, tourism remains one of West Bend's main economic engines as it offers its residents an abundant variety of outdoor activities such as running rivers or swimming (the town has over twenty-five miles (38 km) long beach). During World War I and World War II, many local companies produced munitions for both sides; some still extant facilities still produce munitions today. One notable production facility closed down but reopened following a renovation in 1992 which featured restoration work on original fabric products dating back to WWI including cannons used by America’s leather army Today, West Bend is home to a number of restaurants serving up American cuisine as well as several shopping malls including Sears/Kmart and JCPenney/Hollister among others
