West Bend has been called "The Singer City" for its many musical venues and artists since its early years as a farming community. The first permanent settler in what is now West Bend was John Morse on Valentine's Day 1792 when he and his family arrived from Maryland via the Niagara River on horseback. Morse built a log cabin near present-day East Side Street and Waukesha Avenue to provide shelter from bad weather during wintertime. He also built two other cabins before he died in 1829 at the age of 80 years old. His son James took over management of the farm until his death in 1847, followed by his grandson Amos Morse who ran it until 1893 when it passed to his daughter Matilda Morse Ladd who sold it to her husband George Ladd who developed it into what is now West Bend Township." In 1846, Maria Antonia Hempel married Jesse Kendall of Green Bay and they moved to what is now West Bend together with their four children: Anna (1848-1912), Charles (1850-1925), Addie (1853-1927) and Lester Kendall (1856-1920). In 1850, Gustavus Adolphus Bennett purchased 5 acres along Waukesha Avenue from Jesse Kendall for $100 US dollars which he used as part of his farmstead known as Bennett's Prairie though he never lived there himself! When Prohibition was repealed in 1933, all alcohol sales were banned throughout most of Wisconsin so this significant event helped spur development around downtown and westward expansion among other things! "In 1903 much of what makes up today's downtown core - including apartments above ground level dating back to 1888 - had not yet been built when developer George Ladd bought land adjacent to Watts Park for use as an agricultural reserve." As time progressed more businesses opened up including Black Jack Tavern & Saloon which became one of America's earliest drive-in movie theaters Opry Hall began serving food inside while First National Bank served as a carbonated water stand that still stands today! The following year saw major changes with large numbers of people coming through town looking for work during World War I causing growth spurt along with new businesses like United Talents Cooperative grocery store which still stands today!" Today much of downtown westward expansion happened thanks largely to developer George Ladd who bought land adjacent to Watts Park for use as an agricultural reserve."
West Bend, Wisconsin was founded in 1837 as the town of Beloit. The town was named for General John C. Beloit, who fought in the Mexican-American War and became a U.S. patriot. In 1851, the town was renamed West Bend because of its location on the Mississippi River.
