Over time it emerged as one ofMilwaukee County's leading cities with a strong industrial base that contributed to both its economic development and suburban growth outside of downtowns such as Wauwatosa and Racine; today much of that suburban growth still takes place within walking distance or biking distance of downtown core businesses such as restaurants and nightlife venues like Live Music Hall & Brewery or Fox Point Park Zoo
In 1836, the Town of West Allis was organized. The first meeting was held on July 1, 1836, at the home of Capt. John Wessels. The town was named after William Jennings Bryan, who had run for office in 1835 and won.
