West Allis is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 17,917 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1854 by John F. Goodrich and named for Illinois settler George W. Allis. The first post office in West Allis was established in 1855. In 1866, the town was annexed by La Crosse County and became part of that county's city system. On December 1, 1898, it was renamed to West Allis after its incorporation into the city of La Crosse. The history of West Allis goes back to when a group of settlers led by John F Goodrich arrived in western Wisconsin in 1854 and decided to name their new community after Illinois settler George W Allis who had come through central Wisconsin earlier that year on his way to survey lands near Chicago. Goodrich arriving early enough to see the area that he would later call home had experienced rapid growth due to transportation connections being made between Chicago and Milwaukee which opened up business opportunities for farmers east of the Great Lakes region at this time. However, despite these early successes the community did not grow very quickly as other settlements developed nearby; this changed when railroad companies came along and began building railroads throughout central Wisconsin which opened up new markets for goods and services needed by farmers northeastern of the Great Lakes region including west of Lake Michigan where all too often land lay fallow due to lack of transportation options or simply not being able to afford it since prices for land were much higher further south within states like Illinois or Indiana etc.– thus giving rise both literally (westward growth) as well as figuratively (market competition) to what would become known as "The Great Migration" which saw many people move away from small towns like WestAllis towards cities like Chicago or New York City during this period; an event which has been widely studied due bothto its historic significance as well as current interest in American culture during this time period among both scholars interested in understanding how different groups interacted with each other across regions while also looking at how social changes influenced economic outcomes).
