West Allis, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the seat of Walworth County. The population was 43,831 at the 2010 census. West Allis is located on the east side of Milwaukee River and is bordered by Weequahic Park to the north, Waukesha County to the east, Racine County to the south, and Waukesha Township to the west. It covers an area of 47 square miles (128 km²). The first permanent settler in what would become West Allis was George Stephenson in 1836. He built a log cabin on a hill near present-day State Fair Park. By 1840, settlers had founded nine towns in Walworth County: Appleton, Beloit, Bradford Heights, Burlington Heights/Belmont City, Diamond Lake/Niles North Side/Watertown South Side/Waukesha East Side/Waukesha West Side. In 1846, Stephenson donated land for a public school in what would become West Allis; it opened as Prairie View A&M University in 1892. The city's current name was given to it by John Sargent during his time as its mayor from 1909-1911; he called it "West Allis because there were no other places called 'Allis.'" In 1911–12 Mayor Sargent proposed that all municipalities within one county form a "Great Lakes Shores" district with responsibility for water management and economic development along Lake Michigan shorelines between Milwaukee and Chicago; this proposal failed but aroused enough interest among citizens to prompt him again to submit it four years later when local officials decided not to join Great Lakes Shores despite being offered tax breaks by then-President Woodrow Wilson. After unsuccessful attempts over several years culminating with passage of legislation establishing Greater Milwaukee Area government as we know it today (the precursor to Walker's administration), Mayor Sargent finally became convinced that organized township government could be more effective than individual municipality governments at managing resources and developing community interests within their respective borders - something he had been preaching since taking office in 1909 - so he merged Elgin Township into West Allis on February 14th 1913 becoming one municipality with responsibility for all aspects of town life from planning through zoning through day-to-day operations until annexation by neighboring communities which occurred on July 1st 1916 making street addresses unique landmarks throughout each incorporated village or town under its jurisdiction subject only theretoself!
