West Allis, Wisconsin is a city located in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and it is the largest city in Dane County. The population of West Allis was 97,830 as of 2010. The history of West Allis goes back to 1871 when the town was founded by German immigrants. It was renamed Milwaukee in 1887 and it became an American city on November 3, 1908. On May 12, 1957, West Allis became the first city in Wisconsin to pass a resolution designating Independence Day as July 4th. The City of West Allis also celebrates its birthday every year on July 4th with a day-long celebration that includes food and beverage sales, fireworks displays, and music performances.

West Allis, Wisconsin is a small town in Washington County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,708 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Washington County. West Allis is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Racine metropolitan area. The Town of West Allis was organized on November 3, 1836 and named for General George Armstrong Custer. On December 4th of that year, the first meeting of the town's board of trustees took place with Wm. Halsey as trustee and Samuel Gregg as secretary. The first land sales occurred on February 2nd, 1837 and by October 1st, 1838 all but two lots had been sold out with only a few exceptions (a house on Green Street and an lot near Railroad Avenue). In 1839-1840 three churches were built: First Methodist Church (now Stroudsburg Methodist), Second Presbyterian Church (now Racine Park Presbyterian), and Third Lutheran Church (now Good Shepherd Lutheran). In 1840-1841 four schools were built: Jewett Academy School (now Racine High School), Waukesha Normal Institute School (later Waukesha College), Keokuk Grammar School (now Keokuk Valley Community College), and Menomonee Falls Seminary School (later Marquette University). In 1850-1851 one school was built: Ridgefield Collegiate Institute which became Prairie View A&M University in 1961. On November 3rd 1870 the town voted to change its name to "West Allis", after Major General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the American Civil War at Burnside's Union Army brigade during Roundabout Hill northwest of Petersburg Va., September 1862 - he died from his wounds early November 1865 while retaking Fort Donelson from Confederate forces commanded by Jubal Early - General Sherman ordered his remaining soldiers to bury him north side of Charleston road east of US 31 about 6 miles southwest or soof Petersburg according to author Hanks Frazier describing this event as follows "Custer's remains were brought back to West Allis where they lay under tight security until late November 1865 when orders arrived from General Sherman ordering them removed again... they remained there until recently." After buryingGeneral Custer in what are now Arlington National Cemetery west of Washington Dc., some people began construction on a local cemetery using material I contributed including concrete blocks I dug up east side street between Appleton Ave & Menomonee Ave also known as Rural Cemetery Lots #1 thru #5

West Allis, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Brown County. The population was 107,854 at the 2010 census, making it the seventh-most populous city in Wisconsin and the second-largest city in Brown County. It is also one of two cities in Wis.-the other being Milwaukee - to which Milwaukee County adjoins. The first European settlers arrived in what is now West Allis on May 10, 1836 by wagon train from Chicago. They were led by General Nathan Hale and his brother Israel Hale Jr., who were members of a group that had been sent out to explore land near Prairie du Chien, Iowa Territory. When they reached their destination, they found only underbrush and a few scattered trees; however, they soon realized that this was where an excellent site for fur trade would be located. In 1847, James Fenton purchased 8 acres (3 km2) of land northeast of town from John Smeaton for $1 per acre ($10 per hectare). He named it Fenton's Purchase because he wanted to create an identity for his new settlement separate from neighboring towns such as Racine and Appleton (now part of Milwaukee). The area became known as "Fentonville" after him and later "West Allis." Construction began on the first store building in West Allis on December 20, 1847; it was built by local man Moses Morse using materials brought overland by boatloads from Chicago. Three years later, on January 1, 1850, Congress formally designated West Allis as a town within Brown County with its own government - although there was no vote or signature required to make this happen! On April 15th 1870 when organized business began within town limits we can see evidence that someone had taken some time to plan things: A post office had been erected with name “Allis” printed above it! This gave us our idea that this may have been done before anything else happened about downtown East Troy or maybe even before we even started calling ourselves “West Allis”! But really who knows? We just started calling ourselves “West Allis” back then so whatever happened before…probably didn’t mean anything!
West Allis was founded in 1854 by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail. The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s, reaching its peak in the 1910s and 1920s. However, following World War II, West Allis experienced a decrease in population and architectural significance. In the 1960s, however, West Allis began to experience growth as a center for education and industry.
