It has a total area of 43.6 square miles (111 sq km). According to the 2010 census, the racial makeup of West Allis was 97% White and 3% Black or African American. There are also small percentages of Native Americans, Asians and other races living within its borders. The first permanent settler in what would become West Allis was John Hennepin who arrived on March 17, 1838 from Illinois with his family. He named his new place "Hennepin's Corners" after himself and future United States President James K. Polk Sr.. David Sills started farming there in 1839 followed by George Whitley in 1840-41 before John Prentice came over from England in 1846 and founded what would become Waukesha County about two years later. When Milwaukee became a city it included portions of Waukesha County so that it could be governed as one unit under one government body which would include all citizens within its boundaries regardless of race or ethnicity... From 1847 until 1865 when it merged intoMilwaukee County, West Allis had a variety of leaders including: Representative Abraham Lincoln (1849-1861), Mayor Julius Vogt (1912-1914), Judge Edwin Bauer (1920-1924), Drury Caldwell (1927-29) - who served as Medical Examiner for Milwaukee County - Senators Joseph McCarthy (1957-) and Herb Kohlman (1981-) Reverend Elijah Muhammad delivered prayer services at local high schools up until his death on February 5th 1965; however this activity stopped after he was indicted on federal civil rights charges... In 1969 when Milwaukee gained Metropolitan status they designated West Allis as their primary municipality; however this designation only lasted until 1974 when they reverted back to their original Municipality form... After years of deliberations by both Municipal Councils an act to allow annexation by Racine failed to gain passage through both houses resulting in Racine annexing themselves instead on November 15th 1978)... On December 14th 1992 voters passed an ordinance authorizingWestAllis incorporation as a village with full political representation... The incorporation process took three years with approvals being given from all levels including from the City Council; finally on October 14th 1995 incorporation occurred becoming officially known as "West Allis Township".
West Allis was founded in 1854 as a town in the now-defunct County of Chatham. It was named after General John C. West, who had led the United States forces during the Mexican-American War. The first settlers were farmers and their families, who built log cabins and started a small grocery store. In 1875, the town Joined the Wisconsin Statutes as an organized municipality. In 1886, West Allis became one of two towns in Racine County that joined together to form Racine County Municipality. The merger created a larger government with more authority over local issues than before. In 1907, West Allis voted to become an incorporated city and joined the Milwaukee metropolitan area. In 1959, it became one of eight cities in Wisconsin that were merged into Milwaukee County as part of the Housing Authority Reform Act Amendments of 1959. The city has experienced many changes throughout its history: from being a small farming community to becoming one of Milwaukee's most populous municipalities; from being a bedroom community for Milwaukeeans working in downtowns to becoming a center for culture and commerce within the greater Milwaukee area; and from being home to many businesses to becoming an important transportation hub for northern Wisconsin residents traveling southward or westward across Lake Michigan
