West Allis is a city in the Central Wisconsin region of the United States. The population was 1,951 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Milwaukee County and home to the University of Wisconsin–West Allis campus. The city was founded on May 20, 1873, by George W. Kapp and James L. Simpson as West Allis Center Township. The first settler in what would become West Allis was William Cavanaugh who built his cabin on a bluff overlooking the river in 1872-73. At that time there were no roads or settlements within present day Milwaukee County and only a few scattered farms west of town limits! In 1876, Peter Hahn invested $1,000 into a local land speculation scheme which led to the purchase of 6 acre (2 ha) tracts from John Wentzel for $10 per acre ($). The sawmills located near downtown date back to this early period with logs being chopped down outside the shop door! One early pioneer in West Allis was George Kapp who arrived in 1871 from Illinois with his family after traveling through Iowa and Nebraska on horseback before settling in Racine County, Wisconsin. He opened a dry goods store at 9th & State Streets which became known as "The Kapp Store." In 1902 he erected an elaborate frame building now known as Pioneer Hall which served as village hall until 1951 when it was replaced by City Hall / Community Building . Mr. Kapp also donated land for public school construction including East High School (now White Senior High School) and First Middle School (now Newman Elementary), both of which are still standing today! A year later another pioneer arrived - James Laughlin - who owned 3 acres (0.9 ha) east of current day Third Street between State and Washington Streets and built himself a small log cabin called "Laughlin's Cabin" just south of US 41 / Canada Road/Old Racine Road junction! This early settler had some impact on future development as he started to provide essential services such as water supply, lumbering assistance and road maintenance for settlers within what would become West Allis! In 1886 J&R Smith beganumbering operations here becoming one of earliest successful lumber companies operating along WI 41 north-south corridor! Over time other businesses followed suit including breweries; grocery stores; hardware stores; restaurants; etc., all while generating various jobs throughout theirOperation ! Finally arriving during this era were automobiles making cross country drive possible for many residents ! By 1925 over 50% OF THE CITY'S POPULATION WAS RELATED TO BUSINESSES OPERATING IN AND NEAR WEST ALLIS CENTER !!Today over 60% OF THE CITY'S WORKERS ARE HERE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN‑WEST ALLIS FRONT STREET Campus !! Today’s growth can be partially attributed to two factors – continued investment by our community leaders in infrastructure renewal plans – begun more than 30 years ago – culminating in passage last year of legislation authorizing annexation by Milwaukee County !! And finally…..the recent arrival by students from MILWAUKEE COUNTY PURCHASING LOTS IN WEST ALLIS FOR THEIR SCHOOL SYSTEM!!
