West Allis, Wisconsin is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 97,391 at the 2010 census. West Allis is the second-largest city in Milwaukee County after Milwaukee. It is the county seat of Milwaukee County and home to many major companies including Waukesha County Correctional Facility, Marquette University Law School and Northwestern Mutual Insurance Company. The area now known as West Allis was first settled by Germans in 1836. The name may be derived from "Walde" (a valley) and "Allis" (a settlement). The community was founded on September 12, 1836 by German immigrants who were coming eastward through the land that later became Milwaukee County. The settlers named their new town West Allis because of its location on the west bank of the river which flowed through what is now downtownMilwaukee. At first, all of the residents were farmers who grew corn and wheat for local consumption and exported their produce to nearby cities such as Chicago or St. Paul. However, over time more manufacturing began to take hold in West Allis due to its close proximity to several large breweries and other industry pioneer firms like American Harvester and Briggs & Stratton Manufacturing Company located just outside of town on Menomonee River Boulevard. West Allis, Wisconsin is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 27,214 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Milwaukee County and one of Wisconsin's five cities. West Allis was incorporated on February 17, 1871. The town name may be derived from "Waukesha," a nearby village that had been part of the Potawatomi Nation before it was acquired by the United States as part of the Treaty of Chicago in 1827. "Allis" means 'place where all things are gathered.' This suggests that early settlers here were people who grew crops and collected materials around their home or farmstead. By 1830, however, some residents had started to build small stores and other businesses in what is now downtown West Allis. The first post office was established in 1836 near present day First Street and North Avenue; it operated for two years under the name "Johnsville." In 1843, Waukesha Township (incorporated on December 1st) was formed out of portions of both Johnsville and West Allis townships. At this time, there were only 10 residents in West Allis; by 1860 its population had grown to 30! In 1870-71 when Waukesha Township became Racine County due to mergers with Door COUNTY (then Milwaukee County), much work had to be done to make sure that everything related to township government would stay within the borders of Racine County until national borders were re-established fifty years later. One such task included picking up where John Hirst left off - designing new courthouse buildings which would serve as county seats until Racine replaced Vandalia as city/township seat during World War II! One interesting note about early west allis history is that no street names currently remain from those early days... instead various landmarks like First Ave., State St., Prairie Ave., N Main St., Whitehall Rd & more have been bestowed with similar naming schemes over time including: Hwy 94 (now Interstate 94), Dearborn St (& old Racine Rd.), NW corner Of Park Dr (& NE corner Of Rice Rd.), NW corner Of Harrison Rd (& SE corner Of Idlewild Rd.), SW corner OF Butler Blvd (& NE corner OF Laramie Blvd.).
The first white settler in what is now West Allis was Isaac Brock, who came to the area in 1836. He built a cabin on a hilltop and named it "Brock's Hill." In 1851, John S. Kapp bought the land from Isaac Brock and began farming it. He also erected a log-and-gravel road between his farmhouse and his barn. The first post office in West Allis was established at Kapp's Farm in 1857.
