West Allis is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Milwaukee County. West Allis was founded in 1871 by German immigrants who named their new community Nussbaumstadt after one of their farms near Nussbaum, Prussia. The first post office called West Allis "Nussbaumstadt" on January 1, 1872. It was renamed "West Allis" on November 3, 1879 after local merchant John W. Westall (1827-1892), a native of England who had come to America as a youth to prospect for land and start his own business. In 1886, when the railroad reached the town, it became an important rail stop for farmers travelling between farmlands to market and from Chicago to Marquette Island along the Mississippi River. In 1915, Averill Harriman donated land east of town to form downtown West Allis which served as its commercial heart until 1974 when Interstate 94 cut through central west allis creating today's downtown area with its original Commercial District Plaza buildings at State Street and Michigan Avenue housing several major businesses including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Co., MillerCoors Brewing Company, KFC restaurant, Target Corp., Ford Motor Company (1962), Ameritech Incorporated (1990) and First National Banknorthwest branch opened in 1984 as part of what is now known as First Midwest Bank Center complex also home to many other businesses such as Wegmans Supermarket chain (1986), Starbucks Coffee Corporation (1999), Nordstrom department store Chain Store Exclusive Outlet mall which opened in 2002 adjacent to King's Court Park off North Capitol Drive offering tenants access to over 200 stores across six states under one roof - unique shopping experience not found anywhere else!
