Wauwatosa is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest municipality in Dane County and one of the fourteen towns in Milwaukee County. Wauwatosa was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1903. The name "Wauwatosa" means "place of blueberries." The first settler in what is now Wauwatosa came from Denmark in 1846 and named his farm Blueberry Grove after finding blueberries near his home. By 1870, there were twenty settlers living around what would become downtown Wauwatosa. The first post office was established in Wauwatosa on October 25, 1902. In 1907, the city of Milwaukee annexed portions of Wauwatosa and two other villages to form its new city limits. In 1959, the town adopted a resolution calling for the creation of an agricultural research center within its borders which would be known as WIU-Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station (now US Department of Agriculture). A $5 million bond issue was passed by voters on November 5th to fund this project and construction began shortly thereafter with initial groundbreaking taking place on December 1st 1969. The center opened its doors to students on February 12th, 1971; becoming one of only sixteen federally funded agricultural research centers across America at that time!

On July 1, 1907, the village became a town and on November 16, 1969 it merged with the city of Milwaukee. The City of Milwaukee is now home to over 100,000 residents and is one of the most populous cities in America. Wauwatosa has had many different names throughout its history. It was called Indian Prairie from 1837 until 1861 when it changed to Waubonsen after wagon transportation began coming through this area on horseback known as "the wagons." From 1865 until 1897 it was called Appleton before finally becoming Wauwatosa in 1907. The name "Wauwatosa" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning “a place where deer live or are hunted” which refers to how this area used to be abundant with deer during early settlement days. Additionally, there are several theories about why the name Wauwatosa may have been chosen for this location: 1) Because it is located just south of County Road A (now Interstate 94) between Mukwonago Lakes and Menomonee River; 2) because John Jacob Astor founded what is now Madison Avenue School near here in 1834; 3) because General Anthony Wayne fought at Lake Michigan beach at nearby Mount Pleasant during his battle against Chief Joseph in 1790; 4) because Captain Augustus Chauncey bought land here in 1799; 5) because General David Dixon built Fort Snelling on Big Muddy Creek near present day Sauk Rapids; 6) because Judge Ebenezer Knox appointed Jens Christensen attorney general for Wisconsin Territory under Polk’s administration in 1849; 7) because Reverend Simeon Stevens preached missions from his house at 6085 N 55th St east of Greenfield while he served as pastor at All Saints Episcopal Church north of Greenfield from 1840-1851
