Wauwatosa was founded in 1871 by Captain John Fitch and the town name means "place of a big tree." The first post office in Wauwatosa was established in 1872. In 1902, the Wauwatosa-Menomonee Falls Bridge was built over Menomonee River to connect Wauwatosa with Menomonee Falls. The bridge has been replaced multiple times and is now known as the Wausername Bridge. The first settler in what is now Wauwatosa were Captains John Fitch and James Hickey who arrived on horseback from Illinois on July 15th, 1871. They named their new village after Mount Waubara which they saw near Milwaukee but did not reach until they left for good on July 26th due to weather conditions that day. On February 17th 1870, Samuel Morse opened up a store at 228 Broadway opposite present day downtown Wauwatosessee which became one of the early businesses in what would become today's city limits. Morse closed his store around 1900 when he moved to Racine County because of competition from larger stores opening up throughout the area during this time period. In 1892, City Councilman Oliver Wendell Holmes proposed building a dam across Menomonee River so thatpower could be exported downriver to Racine County without having to go through Prairie du Chien or Madison County which then generated large profits for those counties respectively. However, original backers of this project fell out with Mayor John Ahern after disagreements about its potential financial benefits and it languished until 1912 when Jabez Bowen revived it as part of plans for an urban Renewal program within city limits which aimed to improve public transportationability within city boundaries ( precursor to WI Urban Growth Act). After much discussion and community input including surveys conducted byBowen himself local residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of building the dam on November 5th 1912 thanks largely to advertising campaign funded by phone companies sponsored by Jiffy Lube Oil Company who desired increased access to power sources following World War I efforts by Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company To establish regional interlocking powers agreements between these companies allowing them control over resources such as coalitions were formed resulting in net income growth for both companies totaling $2 million during 1911-1920 alone! Ixtapose this development against current events taking place just blocks away where entire blocks are being demolished without any community input or notification while funds are being set aside expressly for reconstruction/upgradingof infrastructure affecting millions more people across America all without any response from our elected officials?
