Wauwatosa is a town in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. The population was 41,812 at the 2010 census. Wauwatosa traces its roots to 1851 when Dutch farmers founded the town on the east side of the WI River. It was first named "Hudson" after George Washington's estate in Virginia, but it changed its name to Wauwatosa in 1867 because of the name of the original home of Governor David Langdon. In 1907, Wauwatosa became one of three towns in Milwaukee County that were consolidated with other municipalities within Milwaukee County. The incorporation of these towns followed a referendum by their respective communities and did not require annexation from any neighboring municipalities or counties. The community began to grow rapidly due to its location on the eastern edge ofMilwaukee County and access to agricultural land and transportation routes. By 1930, Wauwatosas population had reached 100,000 residents and by 1945 it hadgrownto 140,000 residents.During World War II, Wauwatosa became an important manufacturing center for munitions production due to its proximity to military bases in Wisconsin and Illinois. Manufacturing operations stopped during the war but continued afterward as local businesses transitioned into new industries such as information technology and biotechnology.The current downtown area was developed during this time with heavy investment from city officials and developers who saw a potential opportunity for job growth along State Avenue which runs through downtown Wauwatosa In recent years, investments have been made into revitalization efforts including development of new commercial corridors along State Avenue as well as mixed-use projects at several intersections around town including Main Street/State Ave., Division Street/Wisconsin avenue NW., Third Street/Washington avenue NW., etc.. These projects are intended to create more vibrant streetscapes that encourage economic development while creating opportunities for pedestrians and bicyclists to connect different parts of town; providing quality public space near ramps leading off Interstate 94; improving accessibility for people with disabilities;and increasing pedestrian connectivity within blocks proximate thereto
Wauwatosa was first settled by the Sauk Native American people in 1837. The town was named after a nearby waterfall, Wauwatosa Falls. The first post office was established in 1852, and the first store opened in 1854. In 1865, the railroad arrived and Wauwatosa became a small town with its own hospital and school. The population grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s as businesses opened up and residents moved into new homes. After World War II, Wauwatosa experienced rapid growth due to the influx of workers from Minnesota and other states. The population reached over 100,000 by 1960, but declined significantly in the 1970s as manufacturing jobs shifted away from Wauwatosa. However, recent growth has seen renewed development with new housing developments taking hold in downtown Wauwatosa and elsewhere around the city.
