Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 71,827 as of the 2010 census. Wauwatosa is the largest city in the county and the second most populous municipality in Milwaukee County after Milwaukee. It is also one of eight cities that make up the Metropolitan Milwaukee Area (MMA) and it lies within the boundaries of both Milwaukee and Dane counties. The first white person to set foot on what became today's Wauwatosa peninsula was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable in 1792. Point du Sable named his land "Watomie" after a nearby creek which he believed to be navigable to Lake Michigan. The first European settlement in what is now Wauwatosa occurred when German immigrants founded a farmstead called Heidelberg on Aug. 12, 1839, about two miles (3 km) north of present-day downtown Wauwatosa. This was followed by another early settler named Friedrich Wilhelm Klingenschmidt who arrived in 1840 from Russia via Buffalo, New York City; he built a cabin on Lower Koshkonong Creek near present-day North Parkwest Boulevard. Klingenschmidt's cabin served as an early frontier trading post for local Native American leaders such as Chief Joseph and Hawk Mothaqualwinenetowahakkunkee during this time period In 1846 three brothers under license from General David Dixon organized the town of Ioneipolis (later known as Wauwatosa) out of parts of Racine and Ozaukee counties under their father’s ownership following their purchase of 640 acres (248 ha) along Koshkonong Creek from Chief Joseph at an cost estimated at $5 per acre ($10 million dollars today).
