Wauwatosa was founded in 1847 as a stagecoach stop on the Great Western Railroad. The name comes from two French terms meaning "beautiful place" and "place where wood grows." The first settler in what is now Wauwatosa was Samuel Robbins, who arrived in 1847. Robbins named his land Wauwatosa after his birthplace, wauwatu (a place near Auckland). By 1853 there were ninety-seven people living in Wauwatosa. In 1860, John Kapp bought land from Robbins and erected a sawmill on the riverbank just north of present day downtown. Kapp became one of the most important men in early Wauwatosa because he owned all of the property within a three-mile radius of his mill site. His heirs continued to own and operate the mill until it closed down in 1954. In 1865, George Washington Carver opened Carver's Mill which soon became one of Wauwatosa's largest employers with eighty employees working out of four buildings on Main Street. In 1868, when Badenoch County became Racine County, the area around present-day Wauwatosa Township was added to Racine County; this included much of modern-day Milwaukee County and portions of Dane and Kane Counties as well. In 1871, parts of Winnebago and Ozaukee Counties were annexed into Racine County; those counties had a total population of only 907 people when they joined Racine County. Most residents in early days were farmers or fishermen who depended upon lake fishing for their livelihoods; there was no railway service then so goods transportation must have been by boat or wagon or by horses and dogs which transported goods upriver to marketplaces in Chicago or other points southward until railroads arrived late in the century.
