Wauwatosa is a city in the US state of Wisconsin. The population was 76,906 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Milwaukee County and the seventh-largest city in Wisconsin. Wauwatosa is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of two cities in Milwaukee County that are both members of the Chicago Metropolitan Area's economic development authority. The first Europeans to visit what is now Wauwatosa were French traders on their way to build a fur trading post at Kaskaskia Island. In 1800, German traders founded a small town called Racine on Racine Island east of present-day Wauwatosa. The name was changed to Wauwatosa in 1836 when it became part of the Town of West Allis. In 1854, John Drummond erected his sawmill on current day Clinton Street near Lake Michigan and built a gristmill for use by local farmers. Drummond also began developing land south of Clinton Street for future mills. By 1860, twelve Mills had been built in what is now Wauwatosa; six were destroyed by fire during World War II but six remain today as homes or businesses:Drummond's Mill (1860), Maytag & Son (1912), Northwestern Electric Manufacturing Company (1928), American Can Factory (1951), and A&P Grocery Stores (1999). Wauconda was established as an early village around 1830 near present-day West Allis when people from nearby Racine started farming there because they could not get water from Spring Creek which flowed through central Wisconsin into Lake Michiganwest of where they lived. The first white settler in this area was George Armstrong who arrived about 1840 from Kentucky with his family. He built a cabin on Big Rock Road northwest of present day North Western Ave., naming it Armstrong's Prairie after himself and his son George Jr.. This site became known as Armstrong's Prairie until about 1870 when it came under control of James Cramer who renamed it Cramer Township after himself and later moved some settlers there including Isaac Nordquist who organized the first black township west of Illinois border.- First Indian School opened here: 17 December 1830- Indian school operated until 1865.- White man killed: 4 October 1852 by Josiah Harmar while hunting deer near Greenfield Park.– Two years later John Chappell killed him:- First store opened here: 9 October 1853.- Chappell sold goods here until 1862 when he bought out Harmar.- Second store open here: 7 November 1853.– William Bickerton opened second store here 3 February 1861.– Third store open 2 September 1861– Fourth store 5 August 1865– Fifth store 1 March 1870.– Sixth store 1 January 1888.– Seventh store 10 April 1890

Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,951 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Wausatoan word "watu" meaning "to go." The first settlers in Wauwatosa arrived in 1854 and were German farmers. They named their settlement after Saint George's Chapel in Liverpool, England. In 1875, a group of Americans came to Wauwatosa and started a grocery store. The original post office was opened in 1880. In 1907, the Milwaukee Road built a line to reach Wauwatosa from Green Bay through the town. The railroad helped make Wauwatosa an important stop on the local transportation network. In 1948, when Wauwatosa became part of Dane County, it had a total population of 7,500 people. By 1990s though its population had declined by 10%, it remains one of Dane County's most populated towns with over 11% of all residents living there outside of Milwaukee County
Wauwatosa was founded in 1854 by John C. Weiser and his family. The community grew rapidly due to the railroad being built through the area. Wauwatosa became a popular agricultural town with many businesses, including several breweries and a flour mill. In 1915, Wauwatosa was designated as the seat of Shawano County.
