The town was named after General David Logan Waukesha District Attorney John Fenton Wauwatosa who served from 1861 to 1865. The first post office was established in 1836, and the first store opened in 1840. In 1870, Wauwatosa got its own water system through an agreement withMilwaukee County. According to the US Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 34 square miles (88 km²). The downtown district of Wauwatosa is home to many local businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney & Co., Applebee's Restaurant Inc., IHOP restaurant chains Pizza Ranch and Chili's Grill & Bar-B-Q Restaurants Inc., among others. Additionally there are several professional sports teams playing NCAA Division I football or basketball including the Milwaukee Bucks (NBA), Green Bay Packers (NFL), Wisconsin Rapids Bears (ABA) and UW-Stevens Point Panthers (NCAA). As one of only two towns in Dane County that have their own hospital/medical center - Mercy Health System - Wauwatosa also provides access to top quality health care services not found elsewhere within this large county!

The town grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to its natural resources and access to transportation. By 1870, Wauwatosa had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1881, the city of Milwaukee became the capital of Wisconsin, and Wauwatosa lost its status as an important town. However, it continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it declined due to economic decline. Since then, Wauwatosa has experienced a renaissance with new development including a new shopping mall and a modern hospital.
