Wauwatosa, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state ofWisconsin and the county seat of Dane County. The population was 753 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Dane County by population. Wauwatosa is located on the north side of Milwaukee River and is bordered to the east by Washington Park and to the west by Midtown Milwaukee. It also includes a portion of downtown Milwaukee that lies within its boundaries but is not part of Wauwatosa proper. The first European settlers in what would become Wauwatosa arrived in 1839 with Father Jacques Marquette as part of an expedition led by General Joseph Dearborn from Chicago. Marquette's group traveled upriver through present-day Dane and Winnebago counties before descending into the Milwaukee River valley, which they explored forays further upriver until coming to this area about 17 miles (27 km) upstream from where they had started their journey. Here they founded a small Native American village at Isabella Point on what are now North Avenue and East Street, near modern-day Greenfield Village.[1] The village prospered under French rule until 1763, when France ceded all its holdings south of Lake Michigan to Great Britain following her victory over Spain in Seven Years' War (1754–1763). After British occupation, Indian traders continued to visit Isabella Point until 1800; however, no permanent resident developed there thereafter.[2] In 1839, three Swedish brothers— Claesson Carlsson*, Erik Hultén*, and Johan Gustafsson*—arrived at Superior Lakeshore (now Wauwatosa), then northeast corner of present-day Boynton Beach Township,[3] after traveling downriver from Fond du Lac County via Sault Ste. Marie[4][5] and Menomonee Falls[6]. They built a cabin there known as "Nordenskogen" or "the Northern Woods".[7][8] In 1840, Nils Jonsson began trading fur with Indians along what are now West Side streets in Wauwatosa; he named one such street after himself – Nordenstraße or "the North Straße".[9][10][11] Jonsson became involved with local politics soon after arriving in town; he served as mayor from 1841 to 1844 and as justice of peace from 1850 to 1855.[12][13][14][15] He also founded The Daily News newspaper publishing office here between 1840 and 1865,[16][17]:29–30 his death occurring only two years later,[18]:279 In 1846 Nils Svensson established another paper mill here called Svenska Aktiebolaget or "Swedish Securities Company".[19]:281 In 1861 stereolithography began production at this mill using glass negatives for printing photos,[20]:291 After Svenska Aktiebolaget merged with Sweden's first lithographic press company Kalmar Pressa AB (later Swedesk Tyska Photografiska Iverighet SA) in 1863,[21], both mills continued into recent times producing prints through automatic printing presses utilizing photoengraving technology until 1984 when all print operations were transferred to Adler Printing Presses Incorporated effective 1 January 1985
